Album of the Moment

Unread postby Muspelli » 31 May 2013, 20:20

Because GayTeenForum has one.

A brilliant recreation of Holst's The Planets for synthesizer. '70s synthesizer is the best, I find.

Currently only on 'Mars', and loving it so far (this is my first listen to the album, though I've heard great things of it).

Anyway, post the album you're listening to. If you can find a video link, all the better. And don't just post an album if you're only listening to one song off of it; that's not the point of this thread. This is a thread for connoisseurs of albums as a whole body.

It's not 'of the moment', but I'm posting this album because I have always considered this to be one of my favorite cover artworks. It's just fucking epic.

Also a great Budgie album.

Just found that album a few weeks ago. Love it. Currently planning on listening to 'Prometheus...' by Emperor. Might as well do that now, actually.

A sampling:

Also, I fail to see why this was wastelanded. If the thread stays dead, by all means. If it gets popular, can we put it back in Daily Updates and Finds?

One of Emperor's band members murdered a gay man back in the early 90s.

Probably my favourite album for the last year or so

I do find it's a bit inconsistent to have this wastelanded here (before it's even had a chance to get started) when it's in Daily Updates on GTF

I'm loving your choices people.
I'll be sure to contribute soon. Probably more of a review than a description. This thread may be wastelanded but that doesn't mean we can't give it twice the sincerity of those that aren't.

Yes, lets make people scratch their heads and wonder why.

Ahh Hell I'm busy as fuck with exams so I'll keep this short.

Savages Silence Yourself.

Holy fuck this album. It's rare for me to find one that is holistically enjoyable and happily this is one of those occasions.
A common criticism of Savages is that they are borrowing heavily from older post rock bands. Yes they are BUT evidence of what makes them talented is that they have unified tropes and techniques of post rock that were scattered across many different bands. The result is an album that pays homage to bands of the late 70's/early 80's and yet could not have existed in those times. It's bird's eye view of a genre with an added volume and energy typical of modern times.

But the real reason I like this album is that IT FUCKING ROCKS.

Finally listening to Bowie's The Next Day in full. It's quite good... not comparable to his best stuff, but I don't feel like I've wasted time listening :)

Everything I want in electro music. Like if someone stole the soundtracks of Adventure Time and Bravest Warriors before stepping into a time machine to travel back to 2007 and make an album the present didn't deserve.

Arctic Monkeys- AM

I'd say this is the best Arctic Monkeys album to date. It has a very definitive style and I love the dark feeling each song has underlying it and how polished up it is in contrast to their first album. It's weird but I think the most apt description for the album is just sexy

Let's bring this thread back from the dead.

Image
Hannya - Concert
Turns out Japan has an amazing hip hop scene. As in, really fucking good, but most of it never turns up outside the country.

Image
Within Temptation - The Unforgiving
After years of hearing about them I decided to finally give them a chance. Really, really bland album. I like Symphonic Metal, even the watered down Pop version they're doing, but every song seems to build up to the same boring chorus. And that vocalist...someone teach her that louder does not mean more emotional. It's a well-crafted album but...damn I never thought songs that were obviously made to be exciting could create so little excitement.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - II
I blame a certain GFO member. You know who you are.

Wooo

It's pretty different to Songs for the Deaf and Rated R, I think enjoy more of the songs on this album and they kinda standout more. Kalopsia and If I had a tail are easily the biggest for me. Elton John and Alex Turner popping in every now and then (particularly Fairweather Friends for The Queen).

Image
My introduction to this was a friend telling me they were making a 'weed album'. But it's really so much more than that and I'm bummed I haven't checked it out sooner. They went from bubbly modern popcraft to 70's prog/psych and I'm loving it.

alan - my life

Going through alan's discography while eagerly awaiting her next Chinese album. The singles leading up to it have been some of her best work. Also, her Japanese discography is great for studying as she only started learning the language when she debuted.

Image

The Novembers - zeitgeist

New shoegaze discovery of mine.

Image

The Knife - Shaking the Habitual

Still trying to get into this album. Still failing.

O.C.A.D. - The Truth

If you haven't heard this album in 2013 your opinion is irrelevant. I spent so much time with this album ever since Simon posted Muse on GTF.

I have a feeling I should check this out. Also, loving the cover.

Ali Project - 令嬢薔薇図鑑
Latest Ali Project album, celebrating their 25th anniversary. They're just so much fun to listen to with their mix of pop, electronica, prog rock, gothic rock, strings-heavy arrangements, wannabe opera vocals and whatever the fuck else they decide to incorporate. I'd call them Anison, but that would just be insulting considering how much crap roams in that genre and how much more ambitious Ali Project is.
Their music gets a bit samey when you listen to them for more than an hour at a time, but when they're good they're great.

Image
A$AP Rocky - Long.Live.A$AP
Love/Hate relationship right here. I'm caught in the middle between loving his beats and collaborations and hating his lyrics(does he have anything to say?) and persona. And then there's the...mediocre deluxe edition tracks.

Image
Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. - In Search Of The Lost Divine Arc
No idea how I got to them, but this rocks. Having trouble getting into the 16 and 19 minute tracks a bit though. Still, some of the greatest psychedelic stuff I've found so far...which isn't too impressive since I still don't quite know what counts as psychedelic.
