You get 2 votes on the poll, how much do you think is acceptable in a given situation.

So below 2 units (a pint of strong beer) is reasonable.

Below 10 units ( a bottle of wine) is okay.

Below 20 units (2 bottles of wine)

40 or Below units ( a bottle of vodka)

No choice for non drinkers.
Changed my mind

Maybe you think 2 units or less is acceptable on the regular but on special occassions (like Christmas, new year or an anniversary) you might be down with 40 units!

Maybe you think anything goes whenever? (My phone autocorrected "whenever" to "quencher" so my phone is clearly voting no limit :P )

My friend got into an argument with her mum about how much she was drinking over the holidays. She felt that several bottles of vodka, some wine and a cheeky bottle of schnapps was reasonable, it was the holidays after all and she didn't get flat out drunk.

But her mum felt she was drinking excessively and was worried.

When my friend asked me my thoughts, I kinda understood her position but recognise my upbringing didn't have the best or most conventional attitude towards alcohol.

So I got curious and thought I'd ask you all where you stand?

If your friend drunk several bottles of vodka, some wine and a cheeky bottle of schnapps and didn’t get flat out drunk, her alcohol tolerance would suggest that she has a long-standing drinking problem.

One way of looking at things. That said, it wasn't a case of her drinking all of that in one day but over the course of several days.

The bottles of wine one day, a bottle of schnapps a different day, kinda thing.

Am I right in assuming you'd be fine with polishing off two bottles of wine if it was a special occassion, having family over or celebrating?

I'm confused about how the poll is meant to work.

But I'd say a bottle of wine a week is a good threshold for everyday drinking, and a bottle in one evening is a threshold for a special occasion.

One of the problems I have with these generally bureaucratically designed drinking limits is they are usually offered in a vacuum. I'd say two other criteria matter: time elapsed and food ingested. An individual drinking an entire bottle of wine while preparing and eating a big dinner that took over half the day? Who cares. No biggie. Is that a special occasion or what if they are a chef or other cook staff and that's just how the worknights go? But that's a far cry from the people who grab a togo hamburger and drink a twelve pack while sitting in front of the TV, or the guys who drink a bottle of whiskey every day or two.

It's basically two polls in one. One question about frequent drinking, one about occasional drinking. :D

I would have worded it slightly differently — staying with the idea and numbers behind this one, perhaps:

Any frequent drinking is bad
Any occasional drinking is bad
≤ 2 units a day, frequent drinking is okay
≤ 2 units on special occasions is okay
≤ 10 units a day, frequent drinking is okay
≤ 10 units on special occasions is okay
≤ 20 units a day, frequent drinking is okay
≤ 20 units on special occasions is okay
≤ 40 units a day, frequent drinking is okay
≤ 40 units on special occasions is okay
No-limit frequent drinking is okay
No limit on special occasions is okay

(This could still be changed if PopTart so chooses; as long as the number of options stays the same, the results are kept intact.)

Also perhaps worth pointing out a unit here is a UK unit, which is 10 ml (8 g) of ethanol.
A US "standard drink" is 14 g (18 ml) of ethanol, or 1.8 units.

Yes and done.

This is pretty much my view aswell.

I think someone has a drink problem, when they can't go without a drink. Either they get the DT's, have wild mood swings or change of character. They are dependant on substance.

I think there is a distinct difference between addiction and occasional over indulgence.

Over indulging might be grounds for raising concerns, but I would have thought the nature of the conversation would have been different from an intervention for someone with a drink problem.

Take my votes. I think less than 2 units a day is reasonable. A pint one the way home from work, or a glass of wine with lunch and one with dinner, maybe a glass of whiskey every evening. That doesn't seem like a problem to me.

I might think otherwise if someone had to have those drinks or risk becoming irritable, for example.

When it comes to special occassions, I don't think there is a limit in my mind. It doesn't take me much to get really quite wrecked. :P

Arbitrary limits seem silly. I engage in reckless, self harming behaviours in a lot of different ways (who doesn't?) and I even do so, knowing they are reckless and cause self harm. But I choose to do them anyway, because I enjoy them and I know I would look askance at anyone who tried to tell me, I had a problem, particularly if I demonstrated that I could take or leave the chosen activity that causes harm, without suffering ill effects, like withdrawal or a change in character/temperament.

One of the issues isn't really the guidelines themselves but the way guidelines get inflated into to rules, especially though the media. We have to admit, if a body (governmental or NGO) is going to make it their business to offer a drinks guideline then they have to do it in a way that is easy to swallow (understand). So I totally get why we get these guidelines but I personally, for me, but also when I think about others, I use them as a starting point. However, I generally don't make it my business to judge when another person is drinking too much in the big picture. Totally agree with the idea it's too much when it becomes a problem.

Now, when another's drinking becomes a problem for me? I remove myself as best I can. It's certainly not worth trying to fight a drunk to get him to stop drinking, is it?

Speaking of guidelines, so, if you test positive for Covid on a Tuesday and you're wearing plaid, do you have to isolate for five days or quarantine for seven?

I believe any amount of alcohol causes damage to your health but you have to do a cost-benefit analysis. For me alcohol is the only social anxiety medication that has ever helped. So the right amount of alcohol is however much it takes for me to not be afraid to meet and talk to people. I don't drink often because I rarely go out, but when I do I get propa' hammered. If you're the lucky kind of person who is naturally sociable and confident I think you should be able to stay away from alcohol altogether.

(Like the person above mentioned btw, snacking lots as well as plenty of water goes a long way in alleviating the negative effects ;) ).

Let's be honest, if your wearing plaid, you should probably isolate until you come to your senses, covid or not. :P

You obviously don't live where flannel is a way of life. Granted, flannel doesn't have to be plaid, but finding non-plaid flannel takes a bit more work ...

At least I know you won't be competing for lumberjacks!
