Are very tall guys used to other guys being intimidated by them?

Unread postby Marcus1995 » 9 March 2020, 00:04

I am 6'0 tall myself, and sometimes when I go shopping at the supermarket next to my college I will occasionally see another guy there who I think lives pretty close to there, and he is probably like 7'0 or something (AND with a powerful physique and rather strict-looking), and I have noticed that I always feel really really small when we pass each other.
First time I saw him I was really surprised, and found myself glancing up at him with large babylike eyes - I guess I was subconsciously trying to appear vulnerable to him, kind of like a "please don't hurt me..." sign.
He just glanced back really quickly with a neutral expression and didn't care.
Next time I saw him we were about to enter the supermarket at the same time, and I immediately excused myself and stepped aside, just to give him space to enter before me, and he just gave me a neutral look again and didn't say anything.

Is it common to react this way to someone who is a whole lot taller and bigger than yourself?

Well, I have this unintentional reaction to a certain type of people, really. Not all of them taller than me, but usually impressive in looks or more of a self confident expression. Those that look like a macho sort of type, or, what I would call "alpha male". I found myself stepping aside, moving out of their way and give space..
I used to be slightly over 6'0, now I'm rather a good 5'9 - getting old and done shrunk
Good looking guys I have that problem with, so it's like they are taller in the measures of beauty.
I had times when people would react in a similar way to me bear come waddling along before, and I always felt like "oh no, please don't ...it's only me". Could have been they moved away because of the garlic smells, too.

I can't tell if this is specific in less large toward more large, but it could be quite evolutionary a thing if it comes to more weak versus more strong. In the animal kingdom it's often that way, some strong, dominant male has no more to do than to cross up and show, and the lesser ones already will make way or even run off, not even try to claim equality in position and compare forces, that like.

I'm not intimidated by tall people. I just don't understand their purpose.

I don't really know. I rarely come across taller people myself.

Despite being the shortest boy in my class at middle school in Holland until a Korean kid joined us, I turned out close to 6' which is considered quite tall in my adoptive Scotland.

One should always expect to engage in combat with every person one meets. Detailed strategy on how to kill your family and acquaintances should be memorised, lest you be caught unprepared for when they turn on you.

You can read all about it in my book, How To Maim Friends And Kill People, available from the back of my van.

OT: No. I am 5.3, and so am intimidating to nobody.

But then again, I'm not that intimidated by them, either. The trick is to go for the knees. See above.

It's a non-issue to me... Plus guys aren't really that tall here anyway so it's rare for someone to be tall enough to be intimidating. My boyfriend's 12 cm taller than me and it's fine.

I was the tallest person at my office for 8 months until last week when they hired a 6'4" guy. I'm furious.

I had such acquaintances though. One dude was from NY-City and like 7'3, he was a police officer. The other one is like 6'4 and he used to be our local police chief. Been windsurfing together, his son also grew rather tall. While the son has got that "alpha male" bearing, his Dad just happens to be the kindest person. Son was married to a rather tall American windsurfer, too. I wonder if their children will grow high towers.
Somehow the police forces seem to attract tall men. As findings go, that would also be the case in basketball teams. Field science can be quite intriguing. ;)

As for the fighting : Also can be made work to take off your shoes. Some people just fell for it, sort of. :D
