Creating Online Gay Lobby

Unread postby karl » 26 April 2021, 13:44

Excuse me for maybe being unrealistic or such but I was thinking a lot about it so I'm here seeking for a feedback.

Few of my friends sometimes ask me about gay lobby and often joke that I do good in life because I'm part of gay lobby, which is of course not true. Such thing doesn't exist, at least as far as I know. I know lobby is a strong term, it has some negative connotation, but that's not what I'm aiming for.

In my opinion there is no really strong gay community online, correct me if I'm wrong. Mostly it's about dating apps, sex or forums. Since I'm developer it would be extremely easy for me to build any online system.

I was thinking about creating online gay lobby. Website/community/system which gathers gay population. People who want to join need to be ID verified and/or to pay for the membership. Or it could even work by "invite to join" principle.

Of course there are many questions like:

- Why would I pay

- What is this community really about? What I give to the community and what it gives back

- How do you verify that someone is really gay

What do you think about such community, am I completely wrong here?

I think you need to come up with answers to your own questions before you start pitching it. This isn’t an idea, it’s a notion of an idea.

Of course not. I don't do drugs. As I mentioned: "I was thinking about creating online gay lobby. Website/community/system which gathers gay population. People who want to join need to be ID verified and/or to pay for the membership. Or it could even work by "invite to join" principle."

So this is my idea. And I was looking for a feedback on it :)

That’s not an idea. You yourself don’t know anything about what you’re pitching, that’s what I meant when I said you need to figure out the answers to your own questions before you start pitching it.

Legitimately. Why would I pay for it? Sell me. What benefits is this bringing me?

At the moment, your idea is legitimately about as meritorious as me suggesting that we form a paid platform for cool people or Virgos. It’s the intellectual equivalent of vomiting. Yes, you’ve put something out into the world, but it’s not something anyone asked for or wants in its current presentation.

Give it some thought, come back to us with a pitch. As Leonardo DiCaprio says in The Wolf of Wall Street; sell me this pen.

The two biggest problems that may make this not work is critical mass and gatekeeping. Enough people have to be on it that they keep coming back, and it has to be free of harassment without being overly strict.

The first problem is that gay communities are either so open that they can use normal platforms like Facebook or Twitter, or so secretive that they are kept small and invite only. If you try to make something in between you end up with something that gay people don't know about, or feel uncomfortable using. How wold you handle a case where a hate group discovers your platform and attacks it, or if a few members start becoming radicalized and start dividing the user base up? And, more importantly, what will this platform bring to the table that other platforms such as Facebook or gab or Twitter or Telegram or Scruff can?

Although I suppose you could look into Scruff and Nextdoor and make a hybrid that focuses on making groups that are local, possibly with a stranger-friend system where communication is done on topics but the people discussing the topics dont even have each other's usernames or contact info until they start unlocking it between them.

...huh. There might be an idea for something unique.

The BIGGEST problem you will have is making something unique, but interesting enough to have a draw. For it to get attention it needs to have national awareness and advertising, but functions at a local level. Anything dedicated to gays WILL be used for sex (and that will be a good part of it) and so needs to be able to both facilitate meeting up while providing privacy.

So here's an idea: and app called "Darkrm" or something that does the following:
The main mode is a chat app like twitter or telegram but instead of following specific people, you talk to EVERYONE who is within a certain distance of you. But here's the thing: you have no idea who they are as all their information is hidden by default, except for a randomly generated fake name or image or number so you can tell who said what. Those names are unique to you so that other people would be seeing different names for everyone (you'd need to @ a certain name if you're replying to it so people know who you are referring to). You can get an approximation of how far away they are (like 1km, 10, or 100) but the approximation is calculated so you can't guess who they are, so if you're in a dense city with lots of users it would use smaller bands but if you're in the countryside with further users it would use bigger distance bands. As you talk to people you can save them as a contact and/or set a specific username to them so you can tell when you're speaking to them again, and you can request info in stages - like position preference, condoms or PrEP, yes vaccinated or high risk or not, but identifying profile information like your username or picture or real name could be shared at a later or earlier time depending how your talking goes. You could also have a "current hornyness" scale you enter when you start the app, and have different chatrooms depending on if you want to talk or have fun. People you don't want to talk to you can block or mute for 24 hours (in case they just caught you in a bad mood or fucked up and could use the chance to apologize) with emphasis on the mute button, but you get a counter of how many times or how long ago you muted them so you can decide if you should just block them instead.

If you do this and pull it off I demand a percentage of profits.

All of those things you proposed already exist.

Sex: Grindr
Porn: Pornhub
Talking: GayForum
Gaming: Discord channels
Life advice: YouTube

Yeah, it's fragmented, but it's not like we need a paywall of secrecy anymore to develop communities. And not everyone is on the same page anymore, so I don't think there's enough cohesion among the LGBTQIA+ community for a catchall website to prosper. There would be a lot of infighting and lots of creeps just going there to find people to prey on.

Your idea would have been the shit if you came up with it around 2006.
