Juice Fasting

Unread postby Davis » 4 January 2013, 14:28

I'm considering juice fasting and would like to know if anyone else has tried it and what the results were.
I recently tried the HCG diet but I couldn't survive on the 500 calorie/day plan. I've been watching documentaries and weight loss and reading up on it. What I've concluded so far is that diets aren't healthy because your body goes into storage mode and is preparing for famine. However, with juice fasting your body is getting cleansed and detoxed by constantly having natural fruits and vegetables.

Are you trying to lose weight? or detoxing?
If your trying to lose weight don't change the amount you eat, just eat healthier. Exercise a bit.

That's another thing I'm worried about, however I eat out almost every meal so I'm assuming cost would be roughly the same.

First - this thread title is too easy to misread (in a perverted way of curse)!

Now to the more serious business. I don't think that any kind of fasting is healthy or beneficial. From what I've read, my personal experience and a short chat with my doctor this is not the way to lose weight. Exercise - High Intensity Interval Training (HIT) for exercise and change your diet a bit. Lower the amount of carbon hydrates that you eat (doesn't need to be a drastic thing - just a bit) and eat more protein instead (eggs, meat, ...).

So far I've lost four kilograms in less than four weeks just by keeping a very simple calorie-count spreadsheet and trying to stay under my basal metabolic rate each day. If you want to lose weight healthily and keep it off, you need to slowly alter your diet, not go on some binge diet and "detox" (ugh, pseudoscientific bullshit makes me cringe).

Hm, and not to mention that healthy living needs to be a way of life - an attitude. It's not just struggling to do the right thing. It's changing the way you think so that you always do what's better for you.

Yeah I'm opposed to fad diets. I mean you can get the same results just changing what you eat to healthier alternatives and just eating less calories than you burn. I lost around 200lbs from the ages of 19-20 and kept it off. Fad diets tend not to work long term. Everyone is different though, so if you are feeling like this is something you can do, try it and see what happens.

Do some cardio and slowly change the way you eat(and what you eat). Dieting and "cleansing" your body may give you impressive results at first, but you are almost certain to go right back up, probably to a higher weight than before, once you stop. And they are everything but healthy. No matter what people tell you, staying under 500 kcal/day or surviving only on fruits is not healthy. You are simply not giving your body what it needs to work properly, it's entirely possible that you lose more water weight and muscle mass than fat from that kind of malnutrition.

I guess that could make it work, I'm quite opposed to the whole idea of those supplements though.

Why? supplements are amazing. I take vitamins everyday.

Firstly, the juice fasting diet is between 1500 and 1700 calories per day, not 500. Secondly, juice fasting is a ridiculous concept. You might be getting rid of toxins (which you body does a whole lot better by itself if you give it a healthy balanced diet and exercise), but you can't get everything you need without supplements.

Supplements are absorbed directly, whereas a proper balanced diet is metabolised. There's a reason people should eat fruit for breakfast - it provides a continuous (albeit a smaller) supply of energy, compared to a chocolate bar or a shot of caffeine.

You need to make sure you're eating enough calories to cover the energy expenditure throughout the day. Typically, health trainers will suggest around 1800 calories per day. That will give you sufficient energy to be able to do your daily routines, exercise (at least 2 hours of heart-rate raising, sweat-inducing activity), and not go into starvation response.

Losing weight shouldn't be easy (it took months, if not years to gain that weight), and you can make yourself seriously ill by following fad diets.

Reitou Sakura partly responded to that already.
I just think they are the worse alternative compared to eating healthily and getting everything you need from your normal food. I see them as an unnecessary way to profit from peoples' bad eating habits since, with a proper diet, you can get everything your body needs without using them.

Or I can just take a few vitamins and not have to stress out over what I eat?

If you consider the natural order of things, it'd be pretty unrealistic for a person to consume all the vitamins and minerals that we need in 24 hours. Yet supplements give us everything.

Fasting to loose weight is never a good idea. It's unhealthy during the actual business of doing it and without a serious lifestyle change at the end the weight is just going to fly back on and you'll probably end up heavier. Unless you keep fasting forever, in which case you'll die, thus evidencing the unhealthyness.
