Made me who I am

I recently had to write an essay on what made me who I am today. It went the way of Gay/Human rights. That said, I grew up in the South, the bible belt. I came out in the late 70's, the beginning of the gay rights movement. Sorry if I bring up any bad memories, but the essay reminded me of this happening.

I was renting my first apartment, when I was approached by the the property manager and was told "you can't be like that and live here."

Any other situations (harassment) like this happen to you?

I legitimately lost a job working for my college post office when the lady I worked with found out I was gay. Up until that day she was absolutely thrilled to have me, and had trained me on pretty much everything we had to do. I mentioned something that made it more obvious that I was gay, which anyone with half a brain cell should have already known, and suddenly she was very hostile. She confirmed it with the lady that worked in the print shop, which we shared a space with, and the next day I was fired. Her reason was that I wasn't catching on fast enough, though up until that point it had been nothing but praise about what a good job I was doing.

HR office got me another position that same day. The look on her face when I came to pick up the mail for the Administration building was priceless. She got fired a few months later when she refused to mail something for the college president because she'd already counted her till, even though the post office was still open for another five minutes. The whole thing was just golden from start to finish.

Yeah, that's the most convenient reason they used to come up with. It's getting harder and harder to use that type of excuse though. Was this a relatively recent experience?

No, about fifteen years ago, when I was still in college.
