My experience with ' gay Conversion Therapy/Change Ministry'

We briefly talked about this in another thread, but since this is a different subject, I thought it deserves a thread of its own. It is a difficult but otherwise important issue to talk about. It's also part of our history. I'm sure these abusive practices are still totally legal in many places, so definitely not a thing of the past.

I recorded my thoughts and personal experience in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-n_EaPlEbM&t=3s

What I experienced were preachers going to the bedside of dying AIDS patients and at their moment of utter vulnerability, the preacher “persuaded” that dying person to “admit” he was not gay. Of course, he was gay. In conjunction with that horrible psychological mistreatment, the AIDS patient would be talked into creating a will giving whatever he had to that change ministry. This was a totally disgusting practice.

Please do share your views and/or personal experiences.

well i don't now what happen back then, when there is not many research about the virus and illness. idiot mostly assuming and judging everything not based on research then connecting to religious point of view. i am semi religious person, i think its subjective. if preacher doing it to religios person i think its help him to calm his mind to be closer to the God at his last days. and for not so religious patient its not very helpful. but past is past, now its the future, people know all the consequences they took, want to deal with the virus or not.

There are a couple of issues here. One is the bogus psychological process of changing one's sexual orientation when these subjects are not dying or under undue pressure. This has nothing to do with Aids or dying from any cause. Since 1974, this practice has been deemed bad psychology, harmful to the subject, deceiving to the subject, and useless, by the American Psychological Association. In an environment where being gay is an acceptable lifestyle, such as the vast majority of the United States and much of the world, why apply social or psychological pressure on a homosexual to need to change? Answer: To match the beliefs of a group of people who are seriously misinformed. Isn’t it better, wiser, and more loving to inform the misinformed that there is no reason to try to change one's sexuality or to demonize it? And, of course, these change ministries never work (unless they're working with a bisexual subject who rationally wants to focus on his heterosexual side).
But gays and lesbians – meaning homosexuals – are not bisexuals. So there is no social or psychological need to even try to switch their orientation. There is nothing wrong with them. Nothing needs fixing, except maybe repairing their own self-image, a self image that has been damaged by misinformation.
The other issue here is pressing one to change his orientation while on his death bed. This is so absurd, it’s difficult for me to even talk about it. To go to a dying person, and in the last moments of his life, try to psychologically persuade him to recant his entire life is insanely cruel. Psychologists who admit that they do this would have their licenses revoked.
If a gay man feels that he is a bad person because he is gay, it is always due to what he has learned from church, or parent, or his social environment. The person needs to be counseled that there is nothing wrong with being gay or lesbian. Jack Castiglione

Hi Jack,
I apologize that I wasn't able to listen to your video until this afternoon...

That aside I hope you got thanked back then for your service to the gay community in getting this shut down. Your well thought out series of videos in and of themselves are very commendable. This video goes beyond that in the sense that it conveys that you cared so very much for your fellow gay men (and whomever else struggled with AIDS in those early days) that you were compelled into action. BRAVO!!! (On a tangent, you say you are a free thinker. I would say your actions then could also be compared to those of the days of Jesus -- before the church came up with so many rules. The essence of his teachings were a) Love God with all your heart. b) Love your neighbor as your self. I sense that your effort were very much about loving your fellow man...)

I was surprised that you were so very adult in not judging the "ex" gay who owned those hospice houses. You're a bigger man than I could be. For a gay man (sorry "EX" gay man) to treat those fellow gay men under his care with so much neglect is appalling.

Any thank you for your past endeavors as well as what you do now.

PS: I wish I could write more, but I had surgery last Tuesday so I'm mainly typing with my left hand.
