Poll: Have you had Covid?

Unread postby René » 25 July 2022, 16:44

Curious about our stats.

I've been able to avoid it so far, despite Brenden having had it. Always wearing FFP2 masks around other people, avoiding busy places, fully vaccinated, etc.

What about you?

I suspect I had it in December. I didn't have a test so don't know for sure, but the symptoms were there.

It was certainly not the near-death-experience that society would have you think it was. In fact, it was exactly as Prof. Chris Whitty described it... a cough that's bad enough for you to need a couple of weeks off work, but not bad enough for you to need a doctor.

Edit: When you say 'Have you had Covid?', do you mean, have you had symptoms/been ill, or do you mean received a positive test result?

I meant do you believe you've had it (based on tests, symptoms etc.), but I've added a "Probably" option now. :)

The thing is that it's different for everyone. I've known a 24-year-old to describe it as the worst he's ever suffered in his life. Meanwhile there are lots of people, even older ones, who never have any symptoms. And then there are people who, even though they may have been asymptomatic during the acute infection, end up with symptoms lasting months or years. Millions of people are suffering from what may be permanent disability as a long-term consequence. Rates of heart disease are higher 1 year after infection even in otherwise healthy people with low BMI etc.

It's not the scariest disease out there, but it certainly seems worth avoiding!

I'm eager to get one of the omicron-adapted vaccines that are supposed to come out in October/November. Those should make a much bigger difference than the booster doses of the original vaccines.

I have not. But I had to fully isolate as a clinically extremely vulnerable person during the height of the pandemic. So that probably helped me.

After my two booster shots, I've not really been too careful. If i catch it after 4 jabs... well, what can you do?

I wear a mask on the plane, more because I have to. But everywhere else I go about my normal life. If I catch it, I catch it. It's already pandemic and we aren't getting rid of it any more than we are getting rid of influenza, pneumonia or similar viruses.

That's not to say people should be lax. But I don't see how lockdowns, isolation or the rest, is going to help at this point. It's too widespread.

More than you actually asked René, I know.

^ I figure it's gonna be a matter of staying on top of it with annually adapted vaccines, just like the flu vaccine (which I assume you also get).

I would be extra careful until that cycle begins this fall with the omicron update. We're currently at a point where, despite all the boosters, all the vaccines we've had are farther behind the virus' development than ever before (based on the original strain from late 2019, 3 years ago!), and that's gonna change in a few months.

Especially being clinically extremely vulnerable, I would not be complacent now. If there's a time to drop our guard a little, it's after we've had our updated shots. Just a few months now :)

FFP2 masks are cheap and very effective. I don't leave the house without one.

Anyway, planes are relatively safe with the air getting replaced all the time, fortunately. Brenden likely caught it in a busy cafe. That's the sort of place I'd be most worried about. Poorly ventilated, with lots of unmasked people.

Yeah, I tend to agree, it's here to stay and seasonal vaccines will be the order of the day.

I do get the flu vaccine annually too. It's strange as I have to queue with all the over 60's to get my jabs and the nurse always questions my being there, like... you aren't in your 60's, why are getting a vaccine...

I don't think I'll be in the country when the next vaccine comes out, so I'll have to get mine when I come back mid November.

I've had so many vaccines and jabs this year it's been ridiculous.

I don't mind other people being careful where ever they go, but I just can't bring myself to wear a mask at this point. Not for any moral or ideological reasons mind. I'm just lazy.

I'm considered at increased risk too and here in Scotland they automatically scheduled me to get the flu vaccine at the same time as the booster last year so I was like, sure why not, I'm already here :P (hadn't had it before)

In that case, I'll be a little worried for your lung for the next few months :P

I tested positive early January this year. Right after I got my booster. Bad timing. But in fact, I didn’t feel bad. I just had to spend 10 days at home.

If I have caught it, it has been asymptomatic. I also work at a job where I’m around a lot of people quite often.

I had covid in July 2021. I had fatigue, headaches, watering eyes, blocked nose and mucus cough. I completely lost my taste and smell for weeks. I regained my smell around 4 weeks later and taste around a month. But everything smelt and tasted off for months. It wasn't until October when things started to go back to normal. However the weight I lost throughout it all was crazy.

So brusque! But in any case, I'm glad you wear a mask.

See everyone? This is how people react when I don’t put emotions after every paragraph when writing things on the internet.

But yes I wear the mask. ;)

 They are really essential, along with, often, exclamation marks. It's so easy to be misinterpreted without them!

I'm so glad I was able to provide a lesson for the other forum members. :P

And to be fair, "brusque" can just mean something that's unusually short, abrupt, etc., without connotations of rudeness.

Don't believe so. I've never tested positive, and I was testing twice a week for work at the height of the pandemic. Less testing these days, but never had any symptoms. I've either not had it, or had it and been entirely without symptoms.
