Late last night René suffered a brain aneurysm. Possibly other aneurysms as well; I haven’t heard back about his latest torso scan.

He is currently being treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow.

Please keep him in your thoughts. Prayers, vibes, and good energies are all welcome.

I will keep you updated as I can.

It was a “serious” subarachnoid haemorrhage. His blood pressure is very low so they’re increasing it and trying to keep it steady with a drug pump. Once they stabilise this they want to do a scan with tracer to map out his blood vessels and the extent of damage and make a surgical strategy.

He’s sleeping now but just a bit ago he was correcting my pronunciation of medicine and talking about language learning and translating with the nurse. So that’s a good sign. His speech is slurred but lucid.

He can’t move his left limbs, but he can occasionally feel my touch on his left arm, and on his left cheek. He can’t lift his eyelids far, not at all on his left and only a sliver on his right. But he still sees through both eyes when manually lifted up.

Just when I thought this year couldn't get any worse. :(
But hey, good to know he's talking and partly moving and keeping a good attitude. I feel like he's going to get better sooner because of it.

Stay strong. Do take care to eat etc so you have energy to take good care of him.

No aneurysms found! It was just a haemorrhage, somehow (perhaps leaking from the very ends of blood vessels?), brought on by sudden spike in blood pressure, with no burst aneurysms and no dormant ones either. Some brain damage from the the bleeding, but he’s already recovering. He’s fully moving his left leg again and his left arm a bit and open his eyelids. Slightly slurred speach still but articulate intelligent and lucid.

No surgery required. They’re transferring him to the stroke recovery unit at our local hospital tomorrow by the sounds or it (or maybe even tonight).

Fuck. That was scary. :( Poor René. I wonder what caused it.

Are they able to remove the bleeding?

Already he is able to squeeze the hand of the nurse with his left hand, which amazed the nurse. When he was brought in, his entire left side was “weak” as they described — essentially paralysed except could still feel pain. At around 18 hours from the bleeding he was showing signs of recovering control of his entire left side.

René’s mom arrived in the early afternoon, and our friend Joe arrived from London (bless him) around 6 pm, and we three left the hospital a bit ago as we’re all very tired and hungry. When we left René’s blood pressure was hovering around his normal range. They still want to do an echocardiogram on his heart to check his aorta and observe him for the night. He’s in good hands for the night at Queen Elizabeth Hospital — the staff have been so attentive and nice and caring and wonderful.

Hypertensive crisis due to drug interaction. :shake:

Even though it was a “serious” amount of bleeding, they want to be as non-invasive as possible so they will let his body clear it out and heal itself.

This is good news. I hope the specific drug interactions known so he can avoid that combo in future.
