How do you weigh the harm to society against personal enjoyment? Drinking is a choice people make on an individual basis. What they get out of it can't be quantified. I'd hesitate to insult all the honorable frat brothers in our great society by assuming it's my business to disincentivize their keggers.

The utilitarian arithmetic is clear: no one's personal enjoyment not being even slightly disincentivised is worth at least (just counting impaired vehicle-operation deaths) one person being killed every hour in the US by someone enjoying alcohol.

The arithmetic is up for debate. We cede the fact that life has finite value any time we make a choice that favors expedience or enjoyment over safety. Whether it's worth the price of a beer depends on thousands of individual exigencies.

Let me put it this way. It's horrible when people die, but I judge the risk to my life isn't greater than the enjoyment I've got and will get from drinking. The same goes for automobiles, junk food, sex, or any number of the other components of my vice-packed, sedentary, yet enjoyable lifestyle. If I got killed by a drunk driver tomorrow, it would certainly be ironic and I hope you would all get a chuckle out of it, but it wouldn't affect the logic of this formulation.

Now, maybe not everone is an asshole like me and they judge things differently. But how can the utilitarian perspective account for differences in opinion? What value exists that isn't inherently subjective?

The tragedy, of course, is that many of the deaths caused by alcohol use are not the user, but innocent bystanders in the wrong place at the wrong time. The challenge is how to regulate any potentially dangerous mind-altering substance without unnecessarily criminalizing or stigmatizing it's responsible use. Every culture in human history has had its psychoactives. (Our brilliant president is pushing to expand the death penalty to include illegal drug dealers. I call that a step in the wrong direction.)

If we could take the known statistics of death rates due to alcohol and other substances and push 'reset' on our laws and behavior, that would be great. That was attempted in the US in the 1920's and it didn't go so well. There are traditions, industries, and lifestyles intertwined with alcohol production and consumption that cannot be abruptly ended. Change on this scale takes time (generations) and more than a strictly rational approach.

Trying to figure out what to do for St. Pattys day tomorrow with one of my friends. We're trying to celebrate St. Pattys day without getting hooked into a huge party/bar where it'll take 20 minutes to get a drink.

All you gotta do is learn a couple Irish songs and jokes, stand up on a chair or table, belt them out at the top of your lungs, and you'll get the attention of the bartenders. Works for me every year, no matter how big the crowd.

But there is a huge difference between taking risks with your own life and the lives of others, and society has a right and a responsibility to lessen the risk to others without wholly removing the freedom of the individual. Of the two regulations I suggested, one simply gives more information to the individual and the other creates a slight barrier to the kind of drinking that people don't usually get much enjoyment from in hindsight.

I'm 100% Irish and have no compulsion to drink green beer. Now a good Murphy's Irish red would not get pushed away. Just one is good for me typically.

Kava, a very interesting plant whose pharmacology combines aspects of cannabis, alcohol, antidepressants, anticonvulsants / mood stabilisers and more.

I wouldn't normally use it this early in the day but felt I could use it after making the mistake of going on Facebook and seeing some deeply annoying posts/comments that I don't have time to argue with :runaway:

I feel like I need to contest you being 100% Irish if you weren’t born in Ireland. Especially if you’ve never been to Ireland. I feel like, on those grounds, you are some percentage American.

Which drives me to the need to contest your understanding of nationality vs ethnicity - http://www.softschools.com/difference/nationality_vs_ethnicity/45/

I do also consider myself 100% American. Born here, raised here... Although I'm also thinking of becoming an exPat somewhere as the grass is always greener somewhere else, right?

The 100% Irish is a bit off handed as I know there is reportedly a tiny bit of Polish in my ancestry as well. But that goes quite a ways back so the "%" is terribly small.

I just had a surgery (deviated septum) so I'm on strong painkillers, antibiotic, and anti-inflammatory. I somehow feel like there may be even a little high going on.

That’s what all the housewives say to justify plastic surgery. “Oh I have a deviated septum!” Next thing you know they migrate from rhinoplasty to lip injections to butt lifts to bleached anuses.

Can’t say I blame you. I’ve been wanting doctors to attach a black man’s dong to me for years so I can wield it menacingly like a broadsword on this twink hos.

I'm 99% certain that if porn didn't play off of lazy racial stereotypes, pooler would be a normal, upstanding member of society.

hahahahah to be honest I was kinda hoping it would change my nose's shape a bit, as I also apparently had some oversized bones in there and the doctor sized them down. She assured me there would be no aesthetic changes beforehand and sure enough, she was right. The surgery was done entirely from the nostrils and I could see the end result before the swelling started -- same nose.

Not ever doing this again anyway, aesthetically or otherwise. It's day one and I'm already done with the recovery stage.
