I don't get it. I feel safer at a hospital than at home with my friends or my mom. I don't want to over use the hospital but there must be something missing.

You've described a sense of impending doom before. Maybe it's just reassuring to know you have medical professionals nearby who will take care of you in case of an emergency, even though as a young person you're not actually likely to die anytime soon?

Probably so. Probably some comfort because my anxiety is through the roof.

Is 29 too old to still be getting the urge to write fanfiction?

I was going to say 'yes', but now it's awkward.

René already approved of the alternative view which for some reason my brain seems to have decided is basically the only validation I ever need to do anything.

Has anyone encountered people online who genuinely believe in magic? It seems like there are a lot lately, and I never know what to say to them.

Not online unless encountering her on WhatsApp counts, but there is my mother-in-law... She's a witch apparently. :runaway:

And I thought my mom was embarrassing. Well, I guess she still is.

I need a Dear Prudence style guide on this. Like, you don't want to be a dick and just tell them to grow up, especially if you don't know if the person you're talking to is 13. But how are you supposed to continue a conversation once they bring magic into it? Just smile and nod, I guess.

Can you give us an example? I’ve never come across this.

I need to stop buying books when I still haven't read the ones I'm trying to get through...

Also really need to get new socks. I swear I've got like 3 pairs left that aren't worn through or full of holes.

Reddit has r/occult and r/magick. A few times I've seen threads pop up in book or tv show-related subreddits talking about how "real" magic is different than what's portrayed in fiction, and those subs seem to be their home.

Here's a fun recent post on r/magick:

Oh yes, lots, and I even own several spooky books of magic. I'm basically interested from an anthropological perspective, though.

Although, I suppose it could depend on what you mean by "magic". I would pose that it's basically a means of altering psychological states in yourself or others, rather than the true manipulation of some mysterious "energy" (although it is sometimes conceptualised in that way).

For instance, a major practice, sometimes known as "manifesting", goes like this: You desire some thing or outcome, so you do some spooky ritual or spell which will aid you in obtaining it. The actual content of the spell is essentially irrelevant, but the psychodrama of the magical event should be powerful enough that it "sticks" in the mind. This supposedly improves the focus of the caster, and they'll work harder, or more effectively, in achieving the desired outcome. Some ("chaos") magicians actually agree that the content is irrelevant, whilst others suggest that older, traditional magic has a more powerful emotional grip, and so tends to prove more effective.

As to why it's seemingly gaining in popularity, I'd propose that it improves an individual's feeling of control in circumstances in which they feel are wildly out of their control. See the increasing popularity of astrology, for instance, which purports to inform you of the future. I sometimes imagine that it might be related to increasing exposure to the spectacle of global affairs, in which the viewer is essentially passive and unable to exert any control over circumstances. So, I'd suggest that it can have an anxiety reducing function, too.

More on the psychological basis of magic: I read an account of Siberian shamanistic healing once. A person went to the shaman, complaining of general fatigue, vague pains, emotional distress, etc, and asked them if these symptoms could be alleviated. The shaman somberly proclaimed that the man had run afoul of a bad spirit, which had cursed them, but not to worry, since he could remove the curse.

Some chanting and burning of herbs occur, and whilst the psychodrama lures the man in, the shaman, unnoticed, extracts a wad of feathers from his bag. He pricks the inside of his mouth with the feathers to bloody them, and puts them in his mouth. Then, leaning close to the patient's chest, he appears to extract this horrible mass from the man's abdomen. The shaman presents it to the patient, and then casts it into the fire. The curse is lifted, and the man feels much better now.

More recently, Dr. Henry Beecher, assigned to a field hospital in WWII, discovered a similar phenomenon. After having run out of morphine, he instructed his nurses to give injections of saltwater to injured soldiers. The soldiers, believing that they were receiving what they knew to be a powerful painkiller, drifted to sleep. Beecher even performed operations on completely unmedicated patients, and they reported feeling no pain during the procedures.

Howzat for magic? :P

I once slept with someone several times before I found out they believed in the power of crystal healing. That’s as closely as I’ve broached the realms of magic, and only accidentally. I broke it off after I found out.

Oh my god, crystal healing? How twee.

If there's not lots of smoke, chanting, and blood involved, it's just not proper magic. Good call. :P
