I’m confused. Are you saying people don’t actually believe in a literal hell or that it doesn’t matter because it isn’t real?

I'm saying it's an expression that doesn't carry the weight of its literal concept, even when it's coming from devout Christians.

For one thing, it's an expression in the basic, idiomatic sense, where you can tell someone to go to hell and that's just not what you mean. For another, I don't think the idea of hell as it's imagined to exist is something that really fits into the psychological framework of life as we live it. It's just, like, bad times infinity, a way of describing infinite torment without comprehending it.

You know, when I was a little kid, I was obsessed with the idea of hell. I would lay awake at night imagining what would be like to tortured for eternity. A thought I kept returning to was that it would last for an infinite amount of time, which meant that the risk overshadowed alternative beliefs by an infinite margin. Like, I was five-years-old and literally doing Pascal's Wager. I even started asking my parents to take me to church, but they never did.

You can't live like that. It's just not compatible with the human mind.

I feel like this is the type of absolutism that has us all drawing battle lines every time a political, moral, or philosophical question is raised. People can and do live like that. Be grateful that you have a rational enough mind to analyze these beliefs and that you grew up in a supportive enough environment to allow you to think freely. Many are not so fortunate. We all need to just accept that fact that everyone views the world in very different ways based on their upbringing, their unique personal experiences, and even their genetics.
