I know, right? :P It's like they just exist to make things difficult. Specifically for foreigners learning the language. :pfft:

It'd be one thing if the genders were the same in all western European languages that have them, but nooooo, of course not; can't make it too easy!

I just don't get it. I get languages evolve over time so it's not like someone decided to make every noun have an arbitrary gender designation, but if languages evolve why would it be so hard to just start standardising stuff so that, rather than needing multiple words for 'a' or 'the' depending on what you're talking about, you just use one? Would it be so hard? People would get used to it.

Avoid the annoying situation where, for example, pizza is feminine, but the cheese on it is masculine and the bread it's made from is gender-neutral because literally none of that makes sense..

Remembering what gender to use for any given thing is going to be the biggest hurdle to learning German, honestly. So many of my failures on Duolingo have been from picking the wrong one because I can't remember. That and forgetting which words have umlauts on them. :P

I have the same difficulty in French... but at least they don't have neuters! :P

Thing is I was told that in terms of grammar like this German is one of the more straightforward languages.

So fuck only knows what absolute bullshit some other languages have going on. Haven't even gotten to the potential gender grammar in Russian but that's going to be a fucking treat if the day ever comes, I'm sure.

Not that I'm going to try learning two languages at once. I feel like I'm pretty comfortable sticking with German, after all my hand-wringing about it.

... still going to keep mucking about with Russian though, at least just consistently practising the app-only alphabet lessons until I've got it locked down solid in my memory. I keep saying I'm not going to bother with Russian but I can't seem to leave it alone. I just love that language too much, which is odd because most people consider it hideous to listen to.

I kind of like gendered nouns. I only took a few years of French in high school, but even today the gender comes to me when I think of the word. Like, I don't think "chat" or "voiture", I think "un chat" or "une voiture". I mean it's dumb but at least it adds some flavor to the language. Better memorizing that than a million irregular verbs.

Ah, so you’re truscum. Gendered nouns always seemed inconsistent with my intuition. Why is it that in Spanish a TV is female but a car is male? I mean, other than the fact that women are self absorbed and can’t drive.

By the way, has anyone thought about giving nouns a race and age to go along with it and anthropomorphize them as much as possible? I always pictured coffee makers to be young white guys. They’re always making a racket, have wide child-bearing hips and their piss tastes bitter yet refreshing.

I'm not sure if I'm sad that tennis doesn't have the same huge presence and fanbase that football does because it means outside of Grand Slams (or, being honest, outside of Wimbledon) nobody ever talks about it... or if I'm glad it's not as huge a deal for everyone because it doesn't have the same kind of fanatical toxicity around it that football does with its hooliganism and racism.

Tennis is and always will be a middle class sport, as it involves an individual piece of equipment and a special surface that requires construction and more expensive maintenance than a typical football pitch.

Much like polo is and always will be an upper class sport.

There's also a different psychological dynamic between rooting for individuals and for teams/clubs. Teams/clubs elicit more of a sense of vicarious belonging amongst fans.

I’m wondering which arm they’re going to stick the Pfizer shot. I’m going to get the second vaccination today.

They don’t ask which one you want? I always to use my left arm since I am right-handed. I don’t want my dominant side to be sore.

I'm apparently on a mission I didn't realise I was on to replace all my dark-coloured clothes with light-coloured stuff instead. Which is good because I think it looks better this way, but it does lead me to the thought that I can't help but think everything I like enough to buy for myself would look way better on anyone who wasn't me.

Yeah, they asked me which I preferred.

Which reminds me: I had slightly worrying chat with the doctor prior. Asked if I took any medications, checking for common interactions, I assume. I said yes, I take regular doses of x medicine, to which he replied "Oh, I haven't heard of that one. I'm not very good with medicines", before immediately injecting me.

Also, he gave me some mad shade for my clothing choice (work gear, in my defence) and guessed my age to be "around 40". Construction does that to you, I suppose. Overall, a fairly bizarre appointment, I enjoyed it a lot.

Yeah the lady who did mine asked which arm I wanted it.

Also gave me the 'disappointed older lady' look because I wore a shirt where the sleeve didn't quite roll up high enough because I didn't know how high up on the arm the injection was going to be.

I just finished the German series Dark and the end vindicated my anti-natalism.

Jonas and Marta wouldn’t have suffered at the realization that they must cease to exist to stop the never ending cycle of suffering had their worlds, and by extension they themselves, never existed to begin with.

They actually did, and I chose left even though I’m left handed. I use my right hand for the mouse. My arm isn’t that sore though. :thumbsupwink:

You were jabbed by a doctor? Was it your GP? (Although, I’d imagine they’d know your medications…)

I’m very confused.

Yes indeed, and no, not the GP. I assume they had a list of medicines which are known to possibly cause complications or increased side effects or whatever, which it wasn't on, so it didn't matter. Just thought it was a funny line. :P

It is strange to bump into my ex-wife — not unexpectedly, but also not planned — and then chat and laugh about the past and present. We love and respect who we were together, and recognize that we have both moved on. Life is endlessly complex and surprising. We grow or die.
