She's incredibly incompetent and I don't know how to address it. I don't want to complain, I don't want her to be fired, but I can't keep banging my head against the wall.

You having been promoted from her position, would you be her manager? Because if you are, your job is kinda to fire her if she’s unfit to perform her role. Maybe present it in a way you’d feel confident with? Like piping it onto a brioche loaf?

I was promoted into a completely different role. Theoretically our jobs don't have anything to with each other, and she doesn't report to me.

I don't think she's stupid, exactly. Every time we talk, we go over the problem and she seems to get it, and she even takes notes and stuff. But then she keeps making the same mistakes, or fails to find a solution to a new problem and makes different mistakes. And every time I have to spend a huge amount of time fixing her mistakes, trying to design a process for her to make things easier, explaining the process to her several times, only for it to make no difference.

It's a hard job, actually. It takes a lot of critical thinking and self-correction. It's no wonder they didn't fire me in spite of my attitude and blatant time theft. It's a blessing not to need to hold someone's hand.

It seems like Squid Game is the next in the list of shows that every fucker who knows me tells me to watch because they think I'll love it but that I just don't give the remotest of shits about.

It's fucking Black Mirror all over again.

You mean, you’re actually like this in real life too? Sheesh. And here I thought you were just role playing for us.

I think it tends to come off as more self-effacing in person.

Hard to say. I never had any training and I used to spend a lot of time doing research. If I wasn't sure how something was supposed to be done, I would go scrounging for past examples and even occasionally crack open a textbook. It took me a long while to fully learn everything, but in the meantime I never relied on my coworkers to notice or correct my mistakes.

The more I reflect on this, the more up my own ass I get. I am a good employee. I think I'm going to double down on the time theft.

But, as long as you keep doing her job why should she learn to do it correctly?

I have a 100 dollar gift card for Walmart from my insurance. My roommates daughter is turning 6 and I wanna get her something with it. Any suggestions?

The only thing stopping me buying loads of LEGO sets or jigsaw puzzles to waste my time putting together is the knowledge that I have nowhere to store them once completed.

How about a $100 gift card from Walmart? What does she like? What toys does she play with? What movies/TV shows does she watch? Those would be good places to start.

I'll be honest, I have very little contact with six year olds - female or otherwise - so I'm pretty clueless and hate to assume "anything Disney princess" for example.

lol well today I took her with me to Walmart. I got her a scooter and bath bombs and a loofah. She loves it. The scooter lights up and stuff. :)

We try to get her something big instead of the usual small things like Barbies stuff. Because it would be destroyed by the kids and the dog.

Sounds great! Glad you were able to light up her life. Will admit to having no idea what a bath bomb was until I searched Walmart.com - so where do I get a rainbow one that smells lavender? That would seem appropriately gay enough, no?

They’re actually pretty cool and it makes your skin soft and stuff. There’s definitely rainbow colored ones and some of them have prizes in them.

I'm going into London tomorrow but the train service from my usual station is just apparently absolutely fucked so I have to go out of my way in the opposite direction to a train station I've never used before and now I'm both annoyed and nervous about basic life tasks, which is frustrating.

Derek, I think you’ll enjoy reading this: How the Rise of the ‘Softboy’ Fueled the Culture Wars - Politico.

[…]
One key constant in rock culture has been its spirit of youthful rebellion: In a more consolidated monoculture, it was obvious what one might rebel against, whether it be moralizing, hypocritical authority figures, to “Mad Men”-era unreconstructed misogynists to the generalized ennui of a world where pretty much everyone agrees that things are mostly okay. Depending on one’s perspective today, in an infinitely more fractured media landscape, artists can “rebel” against the stubborn persistence of traditional masculinity by wearing dresses, or against America’s Impossible Burger and vaccine-mandate-assisted wussification by climbing onto Mike Huckabee’s soundstage with a MAGA cap and acoustic guitar.

So the next time a forgotten Y2K-era rocker reinvents himself as a conservative warrior, don’t be surprised — he’s simply carrying out the rock tradition of rebellion, in the manner most befitting his own bubble. The softboy does fundamentally the same, his ascendant status reflecting the relative tastemaking power of those who share his own bubble. So if that strikes you as a dissatisfying state of affairs — from whichever direction your own wind happens to be blowing — just wait five minutes. One of the other few constants in pop culture is its inherently cyclical nature. The softboys, too, will be eclipsed, and whoever inevitably rises up to displace them is likely to be a little bit more hard-edged.
Blow: "Nowadays even Liam can release an album of his screechy vocals and it'll probably go #1..."
