[…]
One key constant in rock culture has been its spirit of youthful rebellion: In a more consolidated monoculture, it was obvious what one might rebel against, whether it be moralizing, hypocritical authority figures, to “Mad Men”-era unreconstructed misogynists to the generalized ennui of a world where pretty much everyone agrees that things are mostly okay. Depending on one’s perspective today, in an infinitely more fractured media landscape, artists can “rebel” against the stubborn persistence of traditional masculinity by wearing dresses, or against America’s Impossible Burger and vaccine-mandate-assisted wussification by climbing onto Mike Huckabee’s soundstage with a MAGA cap and acoustic guitar.

So the next time a forgotten Y2K-era rocker reinvents himself as a conservative warrior, don’t be surprised — he’s simply carrying out the rock tradition of rebellion, in the manner most befitting his own bubble. The softboy does fundamentally the same, his ascendant status reflecting the relative tastemaking power of those who share his own bubble. So if that strikes you as a dissatisfying state of affairs — from whichever direction your own wind happens to be blowing — just wait five minutes. One of the other few constants in pop culture is its inherently cyclical nature. The softboys, too, will be eclipsed, and whoever inevitably rises up to displace them is likely to be a little bit more hard-edged.

I think the author fundamentally gets it wrong in the second paragraph:

Andrew Breitbart presciently observed that politics lies downstream of culture

He was paraphrasing Gramsci, and he was doing it badly. Breitbart was exactly the kind of asshole who'd confuse his own neurotic fixation on dumb bullshit with transformational politics. The culture wars are an extension of a system of politics that found itself incapable of doing battle along other lines. Every random cultural trend the author mentioned could have passed relatively unnoticed in other times. Like the '99 Woodstock event - I'd never heard of it, and it's no wonder given what things were like around the turn of the century.

Also does anyone really care about Harry Styles? I know who he is but he's very much not a figure that looms large in my understanding of the cultural landscape.

According to that article he is the "alpha softboy". I know him as the one with the hair from the British boy band One Direction.

would it come as much of a surprise if I indicated that I still hadn't the foggiest notion? I do know what it means to be "alpha" and "British" and even "boy band", but alas ...

I think I care even less about it now than I did when I made my prior comment. ;)

me? no. why?

okay, I reread and see maybe why - I'm neither British nor alpha and I've never been in or even seen a boy band but that's a concept I understand.

Would you have preferred he mentioned Shawn Mendes? Although he doesn’t have the same effect since everyone knows he’s a closet case.

The only reason I've even heard of Shawn Mendes is because of you.

Tom Hardy On His Sexuality — ‘Of Course’ I’ve Had Sex With Men ‘I’m an Actor for F**k Sake’

I wonder who he fooled around with and how far he went. Also, does this mean Tom Holland and Timothée Chalamet have gotten the succ from guys?

I love Tom Hardy and his beautiful stupid face and his wonderful himbo brain, but what does being an actor have to do with having gay sex?

Oh please. Everyone knows acting and the arts generally is inherently gay.

We get to meet our new CPS case worker around 4pm tomorrow because we believe that our old one got fired but they’re not gonna tell us that. Me and my roommate have been scrubbing the walls, washing all the clothes, decluttering things, vacuuming the carpets, basically trying to make it that they can’t say anything about how the house looks. 3 adults, 3 children, and an infant. We’ve been pretty good with keeping the house clean. There’s always food in the kitchen and the kids have never went without food. Trying to be more organized. Send reminders of kids appointments, school schedules, and whatever after school activities they can do even if the oldest two are only in 2nd grade. The oldest has a Cleft lip and cleft palate and is needing a number of appointments and before surgical procedures as he’s getting older. He has some learning disabilities. Possibly autistic and or ADHD and we believe he may have PTSD. That and his cleft lip and palate makes it harder for him to talk properly and that he needs speech therapy. The other two of the kids I also believe have some form of ADHD like both their parents. I’m probably the only person in the house without ADHD. Not sure about the infant but it’s very likely she might. The way baby girl smiles she is already judging the rest of us with smiles and laughter.

I think I'm actually coming round to the mindset that Greggs' vegan sausage rolls might really be better than their regular ones...

I miss sausage rolls and samosas = we have a Pakistani take-away, but I haven't been there in a while. Their samosas were okay but not great.
