The few specific changes he has promised — getting rid of bots / verifying humans, opening up the algorithms to scrutiny — are like straight from tech ethicist Tristan Harris’ checklist for improving social media.

I think about what I would like to eat cake. But I have to go to the gym.

I think about life, about how it goes for me.
I get lost in my thoughts and have negatives intrusives thoughts.
I’m thinking about playing video games rn, I’m going to do so.

I am simultaneously so disturbed and so incredibly amused by this. I don't typically enjoy mocking people, in fact, I rarely do, but THIS! This is insanely hilarious! The man is afraid of tomatoes and pineapples!!! I can't even process this, because it's so funny!

Eww, Brenden, coming from someone who's studied as much philosophy (which obviously includes ethics) as you know I have, trust me when I say you might want to reconsider bringing up "tech ethicist[s]" as authorities on such things.

I'm sure Kant has plenty to say about the bundle of silicon microprocessors and backlit illuminated pixels in your pocket with a constant telepathic connection to just about every other pocket on the planet.

I don't think there's much more reason to fear Musk than whoever it was before. It mostly just sucks seeing a huge asshole who happens to be the richest person in the world buying an entire social media platform on a personal whim. Also we know his MO, he talks a really big game and then hardly ever delivers.

Believe me or don't. I'm just saying how you're going to look to people who know what they're talking about.

You leave my pickup artistry out of this!

YouTube is extremely invested in getting me to watch Netflix' Heartstopper.

It hasn’t recommended it to me, which probably means you like sappy teen romance like Michael. He watched it and said he loved it. You would too but don’t want to admit it to yourself.
Holy shit, I just found out Dylan O’Brien is 30.

It also thinks I'm interested in Shane Dawson and Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, so I think it just doesn't know what it's talking about. Obviously it figured out that I'm gay but that doesn't give it an excuse to viciously stereotype me like this.

Bahahaha! If you think that's annoying, try when Youtube decides you speak Spanish and insists on only giving you ads in Spanish.
Also! There was a period of a week or two this past year when Youtube kept showing me this very disturbing ad, which advertises a book series that, no doubt, will none-too-subtly shove conservative and supremely capitalist views down your child's throat.

Here’s what YouTube decided to recommend me:

By the way, I stumbled completely randomly onto that thread about the gay guy who was murdered by the Australian. Thank you for saying it so I didn't have to. I'm glad people are starting to call that out more and more.

I'm leaning toward agreement with it, to be honest. I've obviously no knowledge of the deciding factors for each justice, but I'm not a fan of basing reproductive rights on judicial activism, much less the odd variety of it found in Roe v. Wade.
I'm planning on spending some of tomorrow listening to the oral arguments that were given in the Roe v. Wade case, so as to decide one way or another what I think. But that's tomorrow obviously.

Re: What are you thinking at the moment?
"Judicial activism" is a very handy phrase for any outcome in court you don't like - as if it's not an inherently, explicitly political system to begin with. The abortion debate is a contest of radically different and irreconcilable values that touch on questions of sex, feminism, bodily autonomy, religion, and even race. It's ridiculous to pretend that these aren't political issues or that Constitutional law is capable of producing an unbiased answer, whatever that would mean.
As for me, we all knew it was coming, but it's still a dismaying sign of how little progress we're making as a culture.

Exactly! Constitutional law can't provide an unbiased answer, largely because the constitution doesn't speak to abortion; wherefore, it should be a matter handled by state and/or federal legislatures. That's why I called it "judicial activism."
