I'm a terrible impulse-shopper on Amazon and have a tendency to just fill my basket's "saved for later" section with stuff I look at, decide I might want, but then never get round to ordering. So sometimes I have to go through and clear it out and it's always interesting seeing the weird crap I had a mind to buy at some point.

Today's entry is this. I have no idea why I was interested in buying a flag of the Byzantine Empire, one that I'm pretty sure isn't even their actual flag anyway, but apparently I was considering it at some point.

“Peach Peach Home Decoration” lol, Amazon sellers really just try and throw whatever words in their listings they can!

The Byzantines of the Classical and Early Medieval period, much like other states and proto-states at this time, wouldn't have used flags as we use them today (i.e. to denote a state, nation, or empire). This flag shows an imperial seal or icon, which would have been used by some of the Byzantine emperors as a symbol of their authority, but I assume wouldn't have been emblazoned on flags. Perhaps it might have been used as a standard, much like the Roman Empire did? I don't know which emperors used it though, because whilst I had to study a little Byzantine history, I fundamentally do not care.

Anyway, that's just tat. Go the whole hog and get the historically accurate solid gold standard. A much more impressive knick-knack.

If only those grand historical empires had got with the program and realised that jackass wannabe-intellectual history geeks from the future would want to own their national identity as gaudy homeware and just standardised a single fucking flag for themselves. Selfish bastards.

It’s kind of an old meme, but that woman on the news who said that she and her family are “gettin’ all fat and sassy!” It’s the perfect combination of funny and adorable. :D :3

Writing an email to my old American history teacher about how dumb he was when he said that sectionalism is when sections of the country vie to see interests represented in federal politics. How clear it is now, that politics was not a contributor to the Civil War—it was couches the whole time!
