This is probably one of those dumb things that will only be funny to me. I was coming out of my shower and thinking about my doctor's appointment in a few hours. I wondered if I would have a prostate exam since some doctors like to check earlier than 50 yrs. Then I wondered if I could put a note on my asshole saying something like "Hi Doc! Have fun down there!" Because a prostate exam is the only action I am ever going to get, so why not have fun with it, right?

Wow, Britain really came out looking pretty functional for once. While the rest of Europe's an alcoholic, paranoid cannibal who struggles with the rudiments of sex and sandwich preparation, Britain ponders Shakespeare's sonnets. We got the line wrong, but still.

It's been the end-game since the First International. And we would've gotten it, if it wasn't for that meddling Prager! :argh:

I was honestly expecting a lot worse from the UK on that.

As it stands I think Portugal and Spain are the most worrying. Though given their respective concerns the solution for aspiring Portuguese murderers is to give the remains of their victims to the aspiring Spanish cannibals. Solves both problems.

Why does Italy struggle with sandwiches you think? They can somehow make macarons but putting two loaves of bread together with stuff in the middle is too much to handle.

It’s not Italians/Spaniards/Portuguese/etc, it’s English-speaking people in Italy/Spain/Portugal/etc.

Me: Constantly saying I'm not going to try and learn Russian.
Also me: Buys keyboard stickers for Cyrillic alphabet characters so I can type in Russian.

I really do just have zero impulse control... or need to just stop trying to force myself to not do things I obviously want to do.

Is it a diversion? A diversion from what? She’s the only one anyone is interested in watching. It’s not a conspiracy. She didn’t lose, she chose not to compete.

What she did was enter a routine with a move never attempted by a female gymnast in competition and got marked down because her landing was off and actually got a deduction because of how dangerous the move is. She did it because she could. Because it was hard and she felt she was good enough. That’s kinda what it is to be a professional sportsperson in gymnastics. You make the biggest spectacle you can at your skill level.

She isn’t quitting to seek attention, she was by far and away the favourite. She is head and shoulders above her contemporaries. She is, by some margin, the greatest gymnast of her generation.

She withdrew as the favourite, having trained long and hard for most of her life to just be there. Public funds are what paid for her to be in the Olympics. She took a place that could’ve gone to someone else that may never have that chance again. That’s a story. It’s an event of journalistic merit which shapes the context of the eventual gold medalist and their victory. If there’s a story, context is required and so the why needs to be reported alongside the fact. She didn’t quit on mental health grounds to draw attention to mental health, she quit because what she does is extremely dangerous and unless her mind is where it needs to be, she might break her neck and die.

She’s not a villain. She’s woman struggling with her mental health whilst being on the world stage as a result of being the best in the world at what she does.

If you don’t want to read stories about sports people during the Olympics, take a couple of weeks off of reading the sports section. It’s the Olympics. There’s going to be a lot of Olympic-centric reporting on account of it being, you know, an event of global significance where the sporting world establishes who the best of the best is on the world stage.

The baseball/football/hockey reporting will go back to filling the column inches when it’s over.

This has been a lesson on why journalism isn’t always a conspiracy, brought to you by Marmaduke, his grace, Duke of the Forecastle and Anchor Room.

That's not what happened.

And then throw a hissy fit and quit!

Marmaduke wrote:She isn’t quitting to seek attention, she was by far and away the favourite. She is head and shoulders above her contemporaries. She is, by some margin, the greatest gymnast of her generation.

And then when she makes one mistake falls apart and ragequits, because she's a narcissist who can't handle not being the absolute best.

Hm. Maybe humans, like, shouldn't do silly stuff that could kill them just for spectacle?

Oh look, Brenden condemns someone’s choices simply because they don’t fit with what he would do in their circumstances. What a surprising turn of events. Shall we all just draw the worst presumptive conclusion and assume everyone is a cunt? Have you thought about applying for a job on GB News, or with the Daily Mail? They’re willing to pay Piers Morgan, and you’re just a younger face delivering all the same messages, why shouldn’t the right wing freshen up it’s image and draw in a younger audience?

On the one hand, sure, we can presume that Simone Biles is the dastardly villain of the Olympic story. Unable to appear perfect, she grabs all her leotards, cries and runs home. It’s certainly easier to sell a villain to news consumers, especially when they’re black, that’s got a lot of transatlantic traction. You’re thinking with your head there, it’s just good business.

Or we can try to be nicer people, take a pause, have a think, give someone we don’t know, or know anything about, the benefit of the doubt. We could bear in mind that on last Thursday’s practice session she made two attempts at the Yurchenko double pike, a move never seen at the olympics and expected to attract a 6.6 difficulty score. She over-rotates the first, she has a step out on the landing on the second. Her confidence is shaken, she’s struggling with mental health issues - or so she claims, it might all be some Machiavellian plot to sell bejewelled leotards - and maybe thinks that she’s struggling to focus because of it, but powers on where maybe you and I would’ve stopped trying, we don’t have the expectation and hopes of a nation on our shoulders and so the choice to either do it or not do it is certainly more trivial to us. She powers through, thinking she’ll be fine, goes on to start and in her first event stumbles again. She now does feel up to continuing in that event, and instead of risking injury decides to pull out.

An army of bitter little internet people, seemingly labouring under the misapprehension that it’s of vital importance that Simone Biles somersaults regardless of her personal wellbeing, have decided that they’re entitled to some sense of Olympic fulfilment that she has robbed them of. WHAT A BITCH, AM I RIGHT?. It’s not a woman deciding that she went with the best of intentions, spent years preparing, but in the moment and at the time didn’t feel up to it. It’s some vague instance of social injustice and someone deserves a good dressing down.

I mean, you, Brenden, you’re well known on this forum as an avid follower of women’s gymnastics. You follow gymnastics in the press religiously. I don’t know how you or anyone else could avoid an article about someone you care so deeply about, her name would be in the headline, a photo of her would be right under it. How could you possibly be expected not to just skim over something so aligned with your personal interest. You couldn’t just get on with your life and not pass comment. Someone MUST be derided. I can only imagine the profound sense of loss that you’re feeling in not getting to watch Simone compete. It must feel like you’ve been robbed. It’s a violation, certainly. You’re the victim here.
