iPhone 11 Pro. It’s a work thing so I didn’t actually pay for it. But I had it a few months and it’s great. I don’t usually use my phone cameras much, but the wide angle one on this is really useful and I use it a lot more than I did on my other phones. Had an iPhone 8 before that and I was really happy with it as well. Was an android user before, but I really don’t see myself going back.

Yeah, I’m currently using the iPhone 11 Pro too. Annoyingly, it’s the first phone I’ve ever dropped and cracked, but otherwise I’m happy with it. I’ve ventured into Android a couple of times, and it certainly seems a more...creative and progressive platform, especially on the hardware front, but I always find myself coming back to the ease and reliability of the iPhone. I use it pretty heavily through the day and don’t think I’ve ever had a low battery warning on this phone, but then I charge it in the car on my drive to and from work. The camera is great, I actually most enjoy being able to select a wider angle for the selfie camera on this model. Kinda regret going for the green colour though.

The only things that are missing for me, and may still draw me away from iPhone in the future, is the lack of USB-C and Apple’s outdated and restrictive approach to NFC chips in their devices.

I love my Samsung Galaxy S10 :keke:

  • Really smooth running Android 10
  • Gets quick software updates (a first for Samsung)
  • Beautiful in dark mode
  • Has a passable in-screen ultrasonic fingerprint scanner (can't wait for this to get better with the bigger sensor that'll be in the S11/S20 being announced this month though)
  • Does great virtual reality with the associated VR headset (my favourite activity on boring flights)
  • Taking photos is so much better with the separate zoom lens and ultrawide lens
  • Great night photos (when you point the camera into the darkness e.g. under a desk in the evening, you can see everything as though it's daylight under there)
  • Fast wireless charging
  • Good Bluetooth, able to connect to multiple devices at once
  • Decent battery life (but I still wish they would make phones just a little bit thicker so they could fit proper batteries that last more than a day; I bet the increase in thickness would be minimal)
  • Amazingly beautiful screen with a ridiculous 3040×1440 resolution (which is what makes it so great for VR)
  • Still has a 3.5 mm headphone jack
I get the new one as a grey import every year so I only pay like £450 for each phone, which is close to what I get when I resell them, so in the end it costs almost nothing to have the latest phone at all times beyond the initial investment.

I absolutely detest iPhones, iOS, MacBooks and macOS, by the way.

A 10 year old Nokia flip phone. I can't say I love it, but it works and it's paid for. ("Paid for" is more than a lot people on rapacious phone contacts can say about their phone!)

I sometimes wish I had a smart phone, but it's hard to justify on practical grounds. The closest I came to a smart phone was a few years ago Target was closing out a Nokia model for something like $15. I suspect it hit that level--and still lingered--because it was a Windows phone. I honestly struggled--I really don't like Microsoft products, and Windows phones were so limited with app support. But the price was so low for a smart phone. Then, again, one reason for being interested in a smart phone was to run Grindr to see if Grindr is as terrible as I kept hearing on LGBT forums. The remaining phones vanished before I made a decision. Maybe someone bought them (after they lingered and lingered at rock bottom clearance). Or maybe Target gave up, and tossed them in the Dumpster.

I'm low income, and I could qualify for a subsidized cell phone plan. At least a couple--maybe more--serving my area do have free smart phones. But I suspect those phones are really severely limited, low end phones. (This certainly was the expeirence of one person whom I know who is on one of those plans. Although I heard the lecture that: "This cheap phone is better than the flip phone you have!")

One thing that has astounded me is how far phones have come with the cameras, and the technology keeps getting better.

Still has a 3.5 mm headphone jack

A plus...but I wonder how long headphone jacks will remain around on anything.

It's been long enough for me. It's probably been more than a year since I last used the headphone jack on a phone (my old S9).

I was quite loyal to iPhones & put off adapting to Android just because I was so familiar with iPhone... but then I had three iPhones give up on me within 18 months! So much for their reliability.

Then I got a Samsung S8+... which I broke :D So For the last few months I've been using quite a pathetic Samsung A10 (it was only £80 to be fair, and I've been quite impressed with it given that price), but I need to get something a bit more... upscale :D

I'm going to buy outright as the time I spend out of the country makes a contract a bit pointless. I'm thinking the Huwuai Mate 20 Pro. Samsung S10+ is too expensive, the S9+ doesn't seem to differ that drastically from the S8+. The Huwuai looks cool.

I have a Samsung A7, it's good enough as a medium phone but could be better. The frontal camera annoys me because the focus is too close. Sometimes I prefer using older or worse phones my friends have for self-portraits because it's hard to get everything I'd like to get in the picture. Aside from that, it's alright.

I just managed to crack the screen yesterday so that's fantastic, considering I was thinking of reselling it next month. I guess I'll be stuck with it for a longer while now.

Samsung Galaxy A9

Had it 13 months now and has performed well for the most part, I have to mark down the headphone jack though as headphones will no longer stay securely in the jack which is annoying. I'm sure the cameras could have been better or maybe it's just me being crap at taking photos, probs the latter. I'm sad to say I cracked the screen right in the corner where the front facing camera is so now have a great white streak across the screen whenever I try to take a photo with that camera. Went with this one as it has 160GB of internal storage which is good for the amount of high quality images I store on it.

I definitely wouldn't buy any kind of S10 right now as the S11/S20 (name pending) is about to be announced. :D
I agree the general European pricing is too high, but ordering them from Hong Kong (or getting an excellent-condition second-hand) for under £500 isn't too bad!

The big improvements going from the S8 to the S9 were that the speaker is massively improved (produces great sound without any distortion even at high volume) and the fingerprint scanner is in a more convenient location (though if you use a case it doesn't really matter and the S8 is perfectly fine that way).

I'm not a fan of the trend toward massive phones myself, although the specs that come with them are often nice. I prefer the smaller (but still super-high-end) phones as I like being able to use them with one hand.

I hope you're using proper cases with military-standard drop protection to prevent future breakage? :P

Same except the "still is". I could use something with a bit better processor, memory and onboard storage. I just need my phone to be fast enough to not be frustrating to use. Then again once I retire I can wipe the bs security stuff loaded on my phone that is responsible for much of that and then decide if I really need a new phone. The other thing is the battery life is starting to degrade. It's nice not to always have to have that external pack somewhere on you just because you went out for a evening. Oh, and I NFC on the next phone as I now consider that a must have.

I have a S8. It is the first, and the last, phone I bought that was very expensive.
I really can't understand why the price was so high.
I have to charge it 2 times a day.
The official phone case is cheap, and Samsung make you buy their products if you want to use some functions. (I like my phone to be turned on automatically when I open the case, and we can't do it with phones cases sold by different companies)
And it heats a lot when I'm using for too long.

The only thing I am very happy about this phone is his screen, really clean, and it's great to see videos on it.

One thing I've noticed: price doesn't guarantee anything past what one pays for something. There is stuff that is expensive and worth it. There is stuff that is expensive but not as good as something 1/4 the price. There is stuff that's cheap and cheap in all senses of the word. And there is stuff that is cheap but so good you think you have a top of the line product.

This, by the way, is coming from someone who was once (when about 20) conned by "more expnesive=always much better" thoughts.

The only thing I am very happy about this phone is his screen, really clean, and it's great to see videos on it.

The screen in this case might help explain part of the cost. Good screens aren't cheap... And I definitely remember reading something on smart phones a while back that mentioned screens being a huge part problem (if not the single biggest issue) with making a good, cheap phone.
