I don’t really see how that’s a point against those things. It’s like if a country, due to wacky beliefs, forced people to undergo face transplants. Should we now ban them because psychopaths exist?

I just think it fits in the pattern of homophobia amongst transgender acceptance.

It also dispels the (understandable, but false) notion that nobody is compelled into sex reassignment and shows that it can indeed be directly analogous to forced gay conversion therapy in this way.

The situation in Iran was documented quite well in a 2014 BBC News article:

The gay people pushed to change their gender - BBC News

I recommend reading it in full.

How heartbreaking to learn that this still goes on.

I suppose what I should have said, to be clearer, is that: I believe that "nobody (or next to nobody) is now forcibly compelled into such procedures in the UK". Whilst the stories highlighted in the article here absolutely show that sex reassignment surgeries can be advocated for from homophobic premises, I'm struggling to see why one must necessarily generalise from these specific circumstances to suggest that all advocates for increasing access to SRSs are operating from implicit homophobia?

I might be getting the wrong end of the stick, though. The debate is getting away from me.

When Brenden talked about homophobia among transgender acceptance, I'm pretty sure he didn't mean it's pervasive across all advocates for increasing access to SRSs. More just that it occurs when you look around the world and is exemplified by "LGBT" advocacy groups (including UK-based ones like Pink News) and that it bothers him.

Ah, understood! Apologies, I find it a bit difficult to follow arguments in this medium. The issues you raised are, of course, concerning.

Always assumed that Pink News was US based. Huh.

The sales guy I work with is incapable of joining a 3rd person to a phone conversation. why - because he's too busy screwing off all the time. I'm also making a point of it by not doing it for him.

What’s the device?

A Garmin eTrex 10 handheld GNSS receiver (which I see has gone up for £83 to £90 now on Amazon). I can upload GPX waypoints to it to follow when I'm hillwalking and it can log my GPS tracks and upload to my favourite app Fog of World. It should have much better reception than my iPhone X, which is really shitty (as are most recent smartphones). Plus it's waterproof, which after my recent drenched hillwalk proves, is very important for outdoor activities here in Scotland.

This turned out to be a huge disappointment.

Not only does the screen have a line of dead pixels, it is severely scuffed, making it almost unusable! I specifically asked the seller before bidding whether the screen had any issues, because the photo wasn't very clear, and he replied: "There’s nothing wrong with the display, it’s slightly scratched but that’s about it."

A HUGE SCUFF MARK IS NOT "SLIGHTLY SCRATCHED" AND A LINE OF DEAD PIXELS IS NOT "NOTHING WRONG WITH THE DISPLAY". :flame:

So now I have to go through the hassle of returning it, and there currently isn't another used one available to bid on, whereas on the day I won the auction there was another, better listing for the device that was just a few pounds more. :(

Ah yes, the joys of ebay. Just as with retro computers where “untested” usually means not working.

People agreeing to meet but then the day comes and it doesn't happen :shifty:

Honestly don't know what to do anymore, I want to be out and about with people but I keep getting let down, now at the stage where I should just give up, constantly seeing other people I know on Facebook being out with their mates only makes me feel worse

There was a walk scheduled on Meetup for 10:30 tomorrow to climb a Corbett, and I realised this morning that I can get a train arriving in the nearby town at 10:18, so I told the event organiser and marked myself as attending the event and quickly headed off to Glasgow to buy an ice axe and crampons (chain spikes for boots) which are supposedly needed for the conditions on the mountain in winter.

Well, after having spent £110 for this on the train ride home I see he's messaged me that he's suddenly moving the start time ahead to 09:30. He mentioned that there's a train from Glasgow that arrives 08:45. Except, I'm not in Glasgow and for me to make the new time I'd have to catch a train at nine minutes past midnight.

Ugh. Who does that? Suddenly changes the time of an event the day before AFTER they've been informed that a potential attendee can only just made the original time?

So now I don't know what to do. I've messaged him back saying that I live in such-and-such town and the earliest I can get there in 10:18, but I don't want to come off as rude or anything and say something along the lines of "I just spent my day and £110 preparing for this".

Apparently we're all slowly getting poisoned by our furniture and the Conservative government is perfectly fine with it and wants to loosen regulations further.

It seems the right has now found an anti-Greta to fawn over. They’re hilarious, aren’t they? They disparage the idea of having a teenager be the voice of reason in the climate “debate”...until they find one they agree with. Then it’s perfectly legitimate.

Oh god. Naomi Selbt? She said something along the lines of "don't listen to the climate scaremongers, do your own research and make up your own mind".

Fucking no. I mean, yes, but not in the way she implies. The making up of your mind should be with reference to the thousands of scientists, agriculturalists, and ecologists who have been studying this for decades, using fancy equipment and mathematical modelling to come to a reasonably settled consensus.

Do you have ten thousand advanced degrees, a thousand laboratories, the accumulated research of everyone working on this, and the ability to crunch that data (pro-tip, you don't. They use supercomputers now, you dolt). You certainly don't have the ability to interpret it.

I'm pretty sure all of this surpasses any evidence that could be accumulated by some idiot like me watching a billion hours of InfoWars. Unless you think there's some vast conspiracy in which all of the boffins and poindexters of the world have joined forces to bring down Saudi Aramco, then there's no other reasonable choice at this time.

Also, what the fuck? I thought these people were all about rEasON and loGiC? We've got, like, mountains of reasonable and logical research on this. Scientists, when working in that capacity, are easily more reasonable and logical than the average shlub. What gives? Koch dollars, man.. :shake:
