The 500k people who crowded Bournemouth and shit tipped it. Just shows how selfish we are as a nation.

Jesus Christ. I would seek revenge if I were him. I’d kidnap them, but a hood over their heads and leave them in a forest to fend for themselves, with no navigation assistance.

To be fair, much of peoples behaviour can be attributed to the current government, which has prevaricated over the virus from day one.

From the reluctant imposing of lockdown, to the lukewarm warnings, the tory party has been loath to stop the economy.

Is it any wonder that people take from that dithering, non commital public approach, that there is nothing to worry about?

Westminster has delayed at every turn, making final decisions about lockdown extensions, to the point that people have had to make up their own minds about what they can and can't do. The ridiculous drive to re-open the economy in such a haphazard manner, people ask, why can I get a haircut, but not go to the gym? How is it I can sit on the tube, but I can't go into a pub?

The reality is, that the tory government, unsurprisingly, cares more about money than it does about people, no real shocker, but they can't come out and say so. Now, unlike before, they seek to appeal to the former labour heartlands they won in the previous election. People with a much more socialist bent. So they don't dare alienate anyone by making it blatant and instead, come across incompetent. Which is precisely what they wind up being.

But the point remains that between the flip-flopping of westminster combined with a print media that supports the Tory approach, has informed peoples choices.

The message has been much firmer and clearer in the other three home nations.

Hell, I rolled my eyes at the media, I read their appeals to the general public to "raise their voices" and demand a return to work :hitler:
I read headlines like "Magic monday" when they thought the lockdown would end and people would get back to work, I read their barely veiled disappointment when it didn't happen, inspite of the hype, I then read the same headlines "super saturday!" and declarations that "Summer is back on!" and "Flights abroad confirmed!"

Boris himself, with bombast and excitement, told people just before the lockdown ended, he wanted to see "a flurry of activity!" as lockdown ended, ofcourse, he failed to mention that he wanted to see people "flurrying back to work and pumping money back into the economy"

Well he and the newspapers got what they asked for, the problem was, they failed to realise that people weren't hurrying back to place their noses against the grindstone so the wealthy could resume hoarding their stacks of money, no, people stuck indoors for months on end, wanted to get out and live thier lives again and took the newpapers and the government at their word.

Ofcourse, the same newspapers denounced the "outrageous" and "selfish" behaviour of the English people, who just one week prior, they had been told by those very newspapers, "summer living, was back on the menu!"

Boris was seen on tv, making a big fuss, because, ofcourse he had meant, back to work peons, not lets all have fun, honestly.

So yes, while I'm also sorely disappointed in the english public, I'm laying much of that blame at a government that has been purposefully obtuse and non commital and a press that flaunts it's capacity as influence peddlers thats in cohoots with big money and big business, for driving confusion and misunderstanding.

Sorry, bit of a rant :P

Was gobsmacked at those headlines. I know much of the British media is pretty irresponsible, but the "end of lockdown, back to normal" line they took was really bad.

Annecdotally, COVID measures in England seem to have broken down somewhat. Been working in the COVID Heart of Darkness for the past few days, and I've not seen anybody wearing a mask, and there's quite a bit of crowding in some places. :/ I dunno, though. Not been into the central parts of Glasgow, so can't really say if it's any better up there.

People here have just given up.

Some people don't care and those that do, find their efforts defeated by those that don't and so, what use is there? It's an exercise in futility.

I can’t wait for masks to become mandatory in shops on Friday here in Scotland. I’ve only seen one other person wearing a mask in our town in the last few weeks. Closer to the beginning of the pandemic at least the shop staff were all wearing masks, but lately none of them have been.
