Besides, I typically love reveling in ephemera. Guess I'm just too self conscious and won't admit it. :P

I'm typically stuck in the hellscape of using Grindr for a while, getting sick of its absolutd bullshit, deleting it in disgust... but then getting lonely and downloading it again. Repeat ad nauseum until the end of time.

I'm kidding. Get ye to the gay bars. They are the best.

I really want to go to gay bars but I both live somewhere where the nearest gay bars are in London, and also have no gay friends to go with and lack the confidence to go alone. Because frankly it feels unfair to inflict my presence on people who are just out to have fun.

Okay, I don't want to overstate this. They are fundamentally just your average bar with somewhat cleaner bathrooms.

Anyway, go make some friends. People get remarkably talkative after a few. Post Plague, of course. I know, I know, it's not that easy and I'm a prick for the flippancy. Sorry. :P

I know how bars work. They're just not really my scene unless I'm already half in the bag or I'm with other people. I'm not good with strangers. When I'm sober I naturally avoid strangers, when I'm drunk I have a habit of offering to blow them after a frighteningly short amount of time of knowing them. Neither option is ideal for making friends, at least not properly.

Also, the longer this goes on, the more horrifying becomes the likelihood of already having acquired an infection with one or multiple strains of HPV in the throat, some of which will promote the development of head and neck cancers (mouth, throat, etc.) (and possibly others) in the future. No cure or even a good test generally clinically available, and this hangs over not just your but also any future sexual and romantic partners' lives for the rest of them. It's scary stuff.

It's not like anyone ever took me up on it, let's be honest. Me drunk is not exactly sexually irresistible.

It's perhaps worth noting that the virus doesn't care that much whether you're drunk at the time or happened upon a sexual encounter in another context. :P

The virus may not care, but the 99.99% of the male population who quite rightly want their dick nowhere near me under any circumstances are pretty efficient at reducing my chances of any cocksucking-based illness. :P

Not for the first time, homeless people.

I am such a strong advocate that more needs to be done to help them, that a government has a responsibility to most of these people to protect them from the situation they find themselves in. I get that one bad decision can snowball and, without a support network of family or friends capable of helping, it’s all too easy to find yourself in dire straits.

But there’s a homeless guy always sat on the floor when I pass through the station going to/from work. I’ll often offer to get him something to eat or drink if I’m going into the neighbouring supermarket. But, largely due to previous instances of just this sort of horse shit, I almost never give out cash. Reports and accounts more and more prevalently argue that it’s not a constructive means of helping and much more often than not it’s just supporting addiction that perpetuates everything else.

But it’s been horrible in London recently. With windchill it’s felt like -5 at best all day and the snow has been falling almost non-stop. It’s wet and windy and really cold. And I couldn’t just walk past him sat there on the soaking wet floor. So I started talking to him, I found out how much a hostel costs him per night and I gave him the cash to get him out of the weather until the end of the week when the weather is due to turn. It’s not life changing, I know, but there’s being homeless and then there’s being homeless in conditions that are all but torturous. At least that’s how I perceived it. I gave him the cash, asked him if he was ok sorting himself out, he said he was and I went on about my day.

I came back to the supermarket a couple of hours later? Who’s still sat there in the rain? That prick. End of the day, going back through the station, who’s still sat there? Cunt.

Now I just wanna kick him in the fucking face, like, what the fuck are you doing? What sort of cunt are you? I wanna work on trying to be less cynical and trying to see the best in people and leave things better than I found them and you’ve taken that and in two hours have made me hope you get hit by a bus. I can’t even bring myself to look him in the eye anymore. And that’s what I hate most about how people treat homeless people; not even offering them the dignity of acknowledging them. So now I’m angry with myself as well as him. I’ve paid out for him to still be freezing cold and soaking wet, only now by choice, and for me to hate him and be angry with myself for being the sort of naive I try to talk others out of being.

Just unspeakably annoyed and disappointed. That’s my little vent. Never doing it again.

See? That’s what you get for trying to be a bleeding heart liberal. It’s just not in you. You should just give up and go back to being the right-wing sociopath we all know and love.

In all seriousness, homelessness here in Downtown Los Angeles is getting out of hand. There are now tents everywhere and people seem to want them off the streets but not necessarily in housing, just in jail or relocated elsewhere. Most of the deputies at work seem to think that’s the only sound solution. -_-

I had considered at one point when we lived in Barnsley printing out cards with addresses and phone numbers of local soup kitchens, shelters, relevant charities, and local government services for homeless people that I came across.

Thankfully there aren't as many homeless people up here in Scotland, and I've seen some of the beggars being picked up by their families in modestly nice cars after a days' work of panhandling (these ones almost always tend to be South Asian).

Good for you for trying to make one person's life a little brighter. Don't give up hope, or jump to conclusions. There are many possibilities for why he didn't spend your money on a hostel or other shelter. Maybe he is supporting a parent, or sick family member. Maybe he has a warmish place to spend the nights, and can't hold a job for whatever reason. Maybe he has mental health issues. Maybe it is addiction.

We had a serious bit of cold weather here last winter. My partner coaxed a homeless woman to stay at our house until the freeze was over. She stayed a week in my house, then a month in a travel trailer I have. We tried very hard to get her to apply for assistance. There are local resources that could help her. She clearly has mental health obstacles and did not respond to any of our attempts to connect her with ongoing help. Now it is freezing here again and she is still living in her car. (At least she has that.) There is a cold weather shelter available at a nearby church. I thought about offering the trailer to her again, but can't bring myself to do it knowing she will not accept help in changing her situation. We tried.

On the subject of the homeless: I think working in a bookies did a lot of damage to how I perceive the local homeless population around my neck of the woods. I used to feel really bad for them and used to give them a bit of cash or offer to buy them something to eat or a coffee or the like.

But there's only so many times you can see someone you know is begging on the street walk into your place of business, dump all their change into a slot machine and piss it away gambling like an idiot, only to leave and repeat the process over and over again. There's about 4 regular homeless people who are usually somewhere around the town centre here and 3 of the 4 of them pull that shit with us so at this point my sympathy with them is gone since any money they get I just know where it's going to end up. Logically we should ban them but there's another betting shop just the other side of the centre and they go there as well so it's not like it'd stop them in any tangible way.

Homelessness is a systemic problem that needs systemic solutions. Many homeless people have mental disorders, addictions, etc. Housing-first initiatives seem to be the best, because once you get someone into a permanent residence they have an address to receive mail and put on job applications and the state can more easily check on them and get them the assistance they need.

Perhaps from an engineering perspective we need to build sturdy, hard-to-vandalise, easy-to-clean accomodation with the basics: toilet, shower, wardrobe, bed, cooking amenities, and a landline phone.
