I'm fairly certain a (recent but) close friend committed suicide yesterday morning, or at least attempted to. :(

Oh McTaggart? That’s a shame. Here’s hoping it’s just an attempt. 🤞

I haven't heard from him in 36 hours. Tried calling him about 20 times. He wouldn't ignore me. His last messages were very worrying, but I was asleep when he sent them, otherwise I would have reassured him. :(

Well here’s hoping this is actually just an instance of you jumping to the worst conclusion based on thinking the best of someone. Hopefully he’s physically fine and just in a bit of a mentally dark place where he’s shut himself off. Worst comes to worst, hopefully he was at peace at the end.

I talked to him on Whasapp. Last message was on 9pm eastern time zone on tuesday. I've not seen him since. I hope he's ok though... I've lost too many people to suicide.

Yeah. The worst thing is just that... his psychiatrists have been fucking up his "treatment" for the past decade, and with some encouragement from me, he'd finally gotten his current one to see that his situation was unsustainable and he needed something for depression. And he was going to start it any day now, just waiting for the pharmacy.

His last message to me was 5 minutes before his "last seen" time, yesterday 17 Feb 7:43am UK time (2:43am EST), when I was still asleep. It wasn't totally clear, but with hindsight, I guess it was a sort of goodbye.

It may be what Marmaduke said and just jumping to conclusions. If he messages me I'll be sure to let you know.

Yikes! I hope he is OK. Maybe he is busy with his chess tournament or just forgot to charge his phone.

Messages show as delivered but not read, and "last seen" hasn't changed in almost 40 hours. We were chatting every day prior to this for more than a week, and his phone has spent many minutes "ringing" but not being answered.

If he is living alone, do you know if he has someone to check up on him?

He had been staying over at his friend's mom's house, keeping her company as she'd been self-isolating due to a health condition and lonely, at least until very recently. I don't know if he's still there (in which case I would think he would have been found by now, but I'd have no way to know as they'd likely ignore his phone... which I suppose should be running low on battery power, which will give us a further clue if messages stop being delivered to it).

If I'd known more about his whereabouts, I would have called the police to request a wellness check. But I only had a cellphone number and the town he was likeliest to be in (Bethesda, MD).

By the way, his chess tournament was supposed to be in the weekend, so it shouldn't be that.

He said he was busy preparing for the tournament. Trying to stay positive and not assume the worst. Hopefully he has a support system that can help. Even trying new meds can be rough.

This seems like a stretch, but if he hasn't opened WhatsApp in over 40 hours but his phone is still on (i.e. you can ring him), the fact that his phone has remained on (more specifically, charged) might be some reassurance? Fingers crossed he's okay.

That was my thinking, but since then, messages have gone to just being sent to WhatsApp's servers, not delivered to his phone, and calls now stay on Calling instead of going to Ringing, indicating his phone's battery has since died...
