Needed to go out shopping to restock the flat.

Lovely warm sunny day when I left. Got to the shop, did my shopping, got halfway home.... torrential rain downpour out of nowhere. Got soaked to the skin.

Got back into the flat, and like half an hour later it's totally fine and sunny and nice out there again.

Fuck you Poseidon!

My local gym has permanently closed as a result of the pandemic. I have a hard time imagining that anyone else will try to reopen it soon. I had a swimming routine there 3 days a week, and now I look in the window and see the pool looks green as a pond. I'm not surprised. This is a small community and I know the gym was struggling financially before this year. The questions now are how many other businesses will close their doors, and how will the local economy adjust? The 2nd half of 2020 may prove to be more difficult than the 1st.

Wow. The situation is so bad over there... I guess this is what happens when you reopen waaay too early. :shake:

Even scarier considering the US has only 328m people compared to the EU's 447m.

Brenden was just telling me Florida reached a record 10,000 new coronavirus cases in a day. More than in any European country at the height of the outbreak there. (And a bunch of European countries have 60+ million people in them, over 3x as many as Florida.)
And hospitals in Texas and Arizona are overflowing to the extent that ambulances there are now taking people to hospitals in New Mexico. Until those fill up too... :runaway:

Meanwhile, here in Scotland, we are still in the process of very slowly, cautiously reopening, and total deaths here are now below the 5-year average for this time of year. The virus doesn't even make a dent in it anymore here. Roughly zero deaths from the virus a day. :)

Good. That just means America is back to being number one again in something. Trump was the right choice all along. Promises made; promises kept. :oface:

So one of the few sports I enjoy playing video games of is basketball.

Obviously the main basketball game every year is NBA 2K. But I hate the NBA 2K series, for reasons I don't even understand myself. I just never seem to get along with it. I do, however, really enjoy the NBA Live series from EA.

They cancelled last year's NBA Live 20. And given that now the PS4 has pre-order options available for both FIFA 21 and Madden NFL 21, but no sign or any word at all about an NBA Live 21, it looks like there won't be one this year.

So I'm either stuck without a basketball game to waste my time with for at least another whole year, or I have to struggle through getting on better with NBA 2K21 when it comes out.

Between no NBA Live game and there being no new WWE 2K game this year after the abysmal bug-laden failure of WWE 2K20 I'm feeling annoyingly dejected about two of my biggest time-sink games just not being around.

My MAGA mother says it's actually not that bad because the death curve is flattening. I haven't checked if that's true.

My MAGA mother just told me "don't listen to the news" when I mentioned that Arizona is spiking. I told her I don't listen to the news, I look at the figures myself.

New deaths trail new cases by about a week or two.

As you can see in New York's figures:

Meanwhile in, e.g., Arizona:

You can see that the deaths are starting to rise about a week and a half after the cases started rising:

On the bright side, the last 32 days have been the happiest of my life so far. :keke:

I bet it's a shame you can't take boyfriend with you?

Yeah... hopefully eventually he'll realise he wants to grow old with us and see that Scotland is a nicer place to live than Maryland and emigrate like Brenden did and we'll buy a house in Scotland together and live happily ever after with free government-run healthcare and no crazy people with guns :D

It's pretty cool we got to spend a whole month with him now after spending just a few days together after we hooked up at our hotel room in March, though (and to do so safely despite the pandemic). It all still feels quite surreal.

Ooh, I told him a bit about how things like healthcare are run in this country the other night and he said "That seems so easy and nice." and "That's the way it should be."
Then I told him about some more things that just make much more sense here, and he replied "That's ridiculous. At least tell me houses are expensive out there." :awesome:

And now he's mentioned he's a bit of an anglophile!

He already moved from Texas to Oklahoma and later to Maryland before, so moving far away and being far from family doesn't seem to be a big deal for him. And he hasn't physically seen anyone he knows besides us since mid-March, even friends who live in the same town, and even though he's back to working now he plans to keep isolating otherwise and not seeing anyone else for at least another 2 months, and he seems completely happy like that, just isolating on his own or together with us when we come over for a month or so at a time. He does have quite a few friends over there, but apparently not seeing them for half a year has no effect on him whatsoever. I wonder if he's actually introverted to the extent that he likes having the pandemic as an excuse not to physically hang out with anyone but us. :D

All promising signs for eventually getting him to move over here I think :keke:

I figured it it is easier to move out to the UK than you and Brenden moving out in the us. With issues we’re having here in the us it may be more limited.

Brenden and I definitely don't want to move to the US; as you say, there are many issues there. Immigration-wise it would be easier to move to the US, since I could just get a green card as the spouse of a US citizen, but it would really have to be a last resort, and ideally temporary (until a good job opening comes up in the UK or something like that).

Well good luck either way. I like how small the world seems to be thanks to technology and the internet. Hope to be lucky some day.

I would have to seriously question the sanity of any person who would choose to purposely move to the United States at this point. Lived here my whole life and honestly don't know how much longer I'll even bother to stay if I ever have a chance to get the hell out.

Give it time, if the neocons and the religious right have their way we won't be far from a third world country before long. We already lag behind in health care at a dangerous level. Our education levels are in the toilet. We have a MASSIVE problem with unemployment and homelessness. There are still countless places that will discriminate against people just or being different, and no one seems to care. I could continue, but the list is already long enough.

Were they actually just archaeology subs? Also, if so, one of them was apparently a Neolithic focused one. Hahahahaha, suck on it! Bronze Age best! #pleasefundmyresearch

But more seriously, if they were truly just caught up in the storm, is it possible that they're using an automatic system to screen threads or something? Do they do that sort of thing at reddit? I've no idea, it's not really my scene. :P

Also, loving some of the hilariously wrong comments in the discussion thread. Worst offender: "This is because Marx believed in "tabula rasa" or "blank slate" philosophy; which says that all human behavior is learned. Therefore any differences between humans must be the product of cultural influences; and therefore, the natural and fair state of affairs is one in which everyone ends up in exactly the same place."

No honey, no. At least try to aquire a passing familiarity with this stuff before launching into the polemics.

Apologies for intruding on the convo. Archaeology was mentioned and somebody on the internet was wrong, so I basically had to.

Right now... we're not as bad as it can get... Knock on wood that it doesn't get worse. I mean I'm white... Besides being white, Im bisexual woman, in and out of psych hospitals at least 25 -30 times in the last 11 years... stigma for being on disability for a mental illness like schizophrenia also living in poverty level. I don't have it as bad as other people but the system is there to screw those over who try to get ahead. I'm lucky I have medicaid and medicare for my schizophrenia and such. I don't have to pay for my medications. I don't have a copay for me to see the doctor every week here lately so I'm fucking lucky right now.
