I was just censored on reddit and had an entire post deleted because I dared to use the word minority. It was in the context of studies showing a statistically significant lower number of right swipes on people of color of all types, and especially Asian males and black women. They said it was like I was saying that minorities are less desirable and it makes people uncomfortable. I pointed out that studies have shown exactly that, and it's racism so yes it should probably make people uncomfortable. No reply on that but I'm somehow just doubting my post will be reinstated.

I missed the un-butthurt nature of this place.

Reddit has quickly become a censorious shithole.

I'm confused. You raised a statistical trend which you find concerning, but the moderator thought that you were somehow endorsing it? Or was it that pointing out the trend made people uncomfortable, and that's enough to force you to stop talking about that concerning issue? Either way, it's a bit odd for them to take down your post. :squint:

It was in context that many hetero guys don't put any effort into online dating apps, swiping right on every girl because they feel like it's pointless to even try. I pointed out that my own SO whom I met on Bumble, he is both a minority and a bigger guy, both big things that men claim make them fail on the apps, and yet he found a high quality relationship on them because he is a high quality person who put in effort. When people were upset that I'd say he's a minority, I pointed out that there have been numerous studies finding that people of color aren't as often chosen on apps, and thus the censorship began.

That's insane. It's very sad and disappointing that Reddit is becoming increasingly like this... also with their recent ideologically motivated purge of many entire subreddits.

It’s gotten to the point where I have to put every comment thread on Reddit into Ceddit to see the interesting, highly-upvoted comments that have been removed by butthurt mods.

Probably a mix of butthurt and fear of running afoul reddit's new policy, by which subs can be banned if its speech is "hateful". That's how you get an announcement that lists as two examples r/The_Donald - which had deliberately abused reddit's algorithms and tolerated extraordinary racism - and r/chapotraphouse, which... talked about John Brown and landlords. I didn't even know until then that The_Donald had been almost completely abandoned because I used an addon to block it back in 2016.

It's all over at the moment.

I've had similar experiences.

The most shocking (and perhaps, most disappointing) was an instance on youtube of all places. Those comment sections are usually a dumpster fire, but for once a group of people, including myself were talking about slavery, it's impact, racists elements and modern day slavery comparisons etc without devolving into an actual arguement. Everyone was remaining civil and having substantative conversations.

Suddenly huge swaths of comments got deleted and some people couldn't post any comments for ages. My guess, a post got reported by someone and the youtube algorithm decended and deleted everything with potentially hatefull language, which was pretty much the entire comment chain thanks to the topic in question. It was disappointing, because for once, it had people from a broad range of backgrounds, contributing to an actual conversation, with give and take on both sides and a lack of spite and hate. On youtube of all damn places, yet it got deleted. :(

I've had similar things happen on reddit aswell and even Quora has had instances of the same. :runaway:

It's become so indiscriminate that it's becoming difficult to talk about certain subjects at all regardless of which side of the fence one is on. Yet somehow, all the mutually hateful, firey threads, subjects and subreddits, are still alive and well, with people hurling abuse at one another and not much else

My self-esteem is pretty much always at critically low levels and the past few days have honestly just body-slammed the fucking thing to below where I used to think rock bottom was. I really feel like right now I absolutely fucking despise quite literally everything about myself and my life, and I really don't get what the point of my existence even is any more. Just fuck this. Fuck all of it.

I understand to a personal extent how that feels. People who struggle with chronic depression amazes me in a way. I know I may have struggles with schizophrenia and even then I have moments of depression and anxiety which is a horrible feeling. There's more to depression than feeling sad and it's a lot like negative symptoms of schizophrenia. Like apathy, not feeling pleasure, hell even flat effect... Not saying you have schizophrenia but my point is even depression and schizophrenia symptoms overlap each other and I can picture what it's like with it. Also mental illness can take an effect of your physical health too especially when you have no motivation to do anything.

Also mental illness can take an effect of your physical health too especially when you have no motivation to do anything.

Depression is a poorly named illness. Many people suffering from it don't even necessarily feel what is ordinarily called "depressed" or sad.

Noted psychiatrist Dr Ken Gillman covers this beautifully here:

The whole thing is well worth a read, and the whole website itself is brilliant, a treasure trove of resources related to the optimal treatment of depression, written by one of its foremost experts worldwide, a man with a good sense of humour and one who is not afraid to point out (or rant about :P) the flaws in how it is usually treated.

Two fragments:
Recap
To recapitulate: the illness has as two of its central and essential features, the reduction of drive and motivation (anergia), and the reduced ability to get positive feedback or pleasure (anhedonia).

That means that not only do you attempt to do less, because you have less energy, but also you have a less positive perception of your achievements. That is to say, your ability to get pleasure, or see the positive aspect of things, is reduced. The less you do, and the less positive you feel about it, the more your confidence decreases, because confidence is ‘practice makes perfect’. The more your confidence decreases the more susceptible you are to the normal ups and downs of everyday life, which therefore make you more stressed and more susceptible to feeling tense and anxious. The double hit, as it were, is that you not only perform less well, but also have a reduced positive appreciation of your actual performance.
Paradox? Those Suffering the Illness of Depression May Not Have The Symptom of Depression
You may have noted as you were reading this that early on I stopped using the word ‘depression’ and reverted to using the term ‘the illness’. I have always tried to make it to my habit to do this when talking to people in order to de-emphasize the importance of the feeling of depression as a symptom of the illness of depression. It is of course a badly misnamed illness, not only because everybody thinks they know what you mean by depression, but also because depression is not the central problem with the illness. Many people experience quite severe anergia and anhedonia without describing themselves as being depressed.

It has always puzzled me why so many psychiatrists never seem to understand this. The famous English psychiatrist Max Hamilton, he of the Hamilton rating scale for depression fame, did not understand that.

If you read the last paper he ever wrote, where he reported on his interpretation of the results he had got from administering his own rating scale to great number of patients, he concluded the paper by questioning how it could be that so many patients with severe illness did not feel depressed (3). This struck me so forcibly that I wrote to him to explain the above, and why I thought he could not properly understand depression. Unfortunately he did not find my comments enlightening, because between the acceptance of his paper and its publication, he had died.

:P

I feel like anything I'm given for this bullshit brain-failure would only be a stalling tactic to try and delay what I feel like this is going to lead to, which at this point honestly feels inevitable.

Depression physically harms brain cells. Being on an effective antidepressant allows your brain to repair itself.

My brain has at least 10 years of severe damage to repair. That's how long I can say with any certainty that I've had whatever ongoing slow-motion mental breakdown I have.

Probably longer if I think about it properly.

I don't think any drug could repair 10 years of what I've done to myself.
