Are your homeless homegrown or imported?

Depends how you define those terms. Homeless people tend to migrate to warmer climes and social support. In the US, that means the Southwest and southern California.

Increase in walking? Can be a natural adaptation meant to protect your live skin from painful injuries/blisters. Having a callus isn't as bad as not being able to walk because it hurts too much.

Having said that, washing with a 10% sulfur, 3% acetylsalicylic-acid soap would help gradually soften and get rid of it, though it may not be a good idea overall.

May be a shoe/insole issue. You can get soft padded insoles that you cut to size to replace the original ones in your shoes, from Amazon/eBay or shoe stores.

No idea if this is truly causative, but I tend to get rougher skin on my feet during the winter. Possibly something to do with continual hot/cold cycles, causes cracking. If you're outside a lot, possibly wear more/thicker socks?

I’ve watched enough procedural medical dramas to know that this is lupus. It’s always lupus.

My mom has always had issues with cracking skin on her feet in the winter.

Sev, try soaking your feet in warm salty water (you could use epsom salt, but I tend to just go with heaps of the absolute cheapest table salt I can find; Tesco does 1 kg for less than 50p IIRC) for a while then scraping off the moistened dead skin with a pumace stone (found at, e.g., Savers or Superdrug or wherever) and then moisturise, ideally with a moisturiser formulated specifically for the feet containing urea, every day, especially just before putting on socks.

Oh, alternatively, could it be not enough walking? Can cause swelling of the feet, which I suppose could similarly cause cracking.

Basically:

Majority are homegrown.

You are kidding yourself if you think nothing is being done in LA. The problem is greater than the response, but many good people are working their asses off to try to improve the situation.

Jeeze, I was being rhetorical here. I have a few friends who are social workers working in shelters so yeah, I’m aware. The issue isn’t that nothing literally is being done but that the solutions are half-assed and underfunded. As Brenden said, there needs to be a complete commitment to shelter-first initiatives.

It's confusing. If it was lack of walking it would have happened a long time ago. And if it was the walking that did it... when I'm at work and not furloughed I walked an hour a day (half hour there and back) 5 days a week and it never happened to me doing that.

I've got moisturising cream specifically for feet but I think I need to try Brenden's soak-and-scrub advice because right now putting foot cream on this horror show is like trying to moisturising a turtle by rubbing the cream on its shell. It just gets nowhere.

Why is my body so consistently disappointing and/or horrifying?

Whoah, 3 out of 4 are rough-sleepers‽ That's crazy! The proportion of homeless in the UK who are rough-sleepers is minuscule by comparison; most of the homeless here are couch-surfers or temporarily sheltered.

Not just shelter-first initiatives, but permanent-shelter-first/housing-first initiatives.

If it is just dry skin, the best lotion I have used for severe dryness is Curel Ultra Healing. My hands especially have problems with the winter air. I use it every night.

I have known a couple of people who feet peel as a reaction to food. Very strange.

This vaccine rollout is such a cluster fuck. They have had a year to prepare. This makes me very concerned about any government related healthcare efforts in the U.S.

Husband’s stalkerish ex-friend contacted him today, which understandably upset him. I talked him through it though and we got a good sleep.

Under Trump, nothing was going to happen since universal healthcare is half a step away from full blown communism. Now that the Democrats are in full control, who knows.

I had one of my bizarre nights where I have disturbing dreams and wake up every few hours. In the last dream, I wandered into a small area where people were living outside. A little girl, maybe around 3 years old, came up to me needing help. Everyone was ignoring her, and she didn’t seem to have any family. She was filthy and soaked. I asked her to show me where her clean clothes were. She showed me a pile of clothes that were even dirtier than the ones she was wearing. I couldn’t figure out how to help her, and then I woke up.

It is a very strange feeling to start the day feeling so sad about something that didn’t actually happen.

I am so weird.
