What put a frown on your face today?

Being sick. (But fortunately it doesn't seem to be Covid.)

I’m saddened by Tikka’s passing, of course, but hardly surprised that it happened, since she’d been ailing and diminishing for weeks.

I was so sorry to hear.

I'm genuinely coming to hate driving in Brazil. Nobody follows the already non-sensical rules of the road. Other road users are rude and inconsiderate. Motorbikes seem to operate entirely on some other plane of logic and they are absolutely everywhere! They outnumber cars much of the time. The roads have insufficient signage, the speed limits make no sense, the roads have potholes that would be better described as ravines.

It really is beyond belief.

I never thought I'd miss the roads in the UK, which while being more congested with more cars on average, flow with far greater efficiency and if I dare say it, civility.

It's entirely likely I'll commit. Pre-meditated, vehicular homicide before I come home.

I hate to say it, but I mean, welcome to driving lol

Things might be bad in Brazil, but only as a matter of degree! It’s part of the reason I don’t drive hahaha

Yeah, that’s just a bit too stressful for my liking.

Also since when we’re you in Brazil?

Driving in the UK is nice. Atleast, in comparison to my experience in other places.

And I've been in Brazil since the beginning of August.

Why? Vacation, business, or did you make the questionable decision to move there (questionable owing to heat and humidity more than much else, that is)?

And it probably only seems nice because you don’t have a severe anxiety disorder! I’d be worried constantly that people were judging me!

Amazon's idiotic, foul, monstrous, evil, terrible, horrible, abominable, LOTR TV series which has insufficient basis in the Silmarillion! They would treat Tolkien's works as though they weren't beautiful works of written-art, which represent (imo) the greatest works of high fantasy ever written! May a thousand evils befall them for this! :flame: :flame: :flame:

[Edit/update] I think I'm even more pissed at this point. I want to punch Jeff Bezos, even if he had nothing to do with the series. I'm honesty quite angry about this latest development in the LOTR commercial enterprise, wherein everyone tries to make as much money as they can devaluing and desecrating Tolkien's works.

No… I actually think it’s an amazing series and every person on Earth should watch it, because it so wonderfully honors and respects Tolkien’s memory, which is that of one of the greatest writers ever known to our species.

Don’t be insensible, or else disingenuous. It’s remarkably unseemly.

I wasn't trying to be disingenuous. Flippant, perhaps, but not disingenuous.

I myself have less than zero desire to ever watch Rings of Power because it's just another one of those shows that by all logic I should be into but I find myself incapable of giving a shit (see also stuff like Black Mirror, Squid Game etc.)

But from that perspective the vast majority of discourse I've seen regarding the show is either "it's the greatest thing ever" or "they put black people in it so it's terrible and I hate it" and while I'm not accusing you of that racist as fuck brand of negativity about it, I am curious about what about it has angered you so much.

I'm not a huge Tolkien fan (I like Lord of the Rings but I've never read either the Hobbit or the Silmarillion, and while I love the LOTR movies I am also one of the rare mutants that likes the Hobbit movies too) so my perspective on this show is incredibly narrow from a Tolkien-loyal point of view.

You liked the Hobbit movies? :wide-eyed: :squint:  :P

I have no intention of watching the new LOTR series either. With only the license for the Silmarillion, which isn't a conventional "story" so much as a lexicon of historic events, Amazon are forced to take considerable liberties with the source material from the get go. Add to that some questionable choices in order to make the show, and I quote "Amazons Game of Thrones" simply demonstrates that Amazon doesn't understand the material they are working with. It will inevitably be a bad adaptation and I'm a purist.

Skipping it and saving myself the misery of dealing with all the controversy surrounding the whole thing.

I think it’s worth a watch just for the production of it all. It absolutely feels like it cost every bit as much as they rumouring. It’s visually stunning. It’s an amazing tour de force of what is possible for “television”. It makes Game of Thrones look almost cheap and small.

My ability to enjoy movies that the vast majority of the rest of humanity consider hideous dogshit is well-documented. *cough*Batman v Superman*cough*

I suppose, but I don’t see how you can manage to avoid pulling your hair out in rage while watching.

I don’t care about much in life, but goodness knows I care immensely about philosophy (obviously), imperialism and the monarchy (because, well, it’s me), and Tolkien.

There will be no controversy, or at least there shouldn’t be. The fact of the matter is that Amazon’s series should’ve been aborted at conception. Anyone who thinks otherwise is welcome to take it up with me, and I’ll give them a good talking to; because I simply won’t abide any naysayers when it comes to this. The fact is what it is, and if others refuse to accept it, then I’m quite content to say of them what Avicenna said of those who refuse to accept the law of contradiction.

It’s been ~ 105 °F this Labor Day weekend and a few hours ago I got a flat tire and had to change it in an open parking lot.
Blow: "Nowadays even Liam can release an album of his screechy vocals and it'll probably go #1..."
Ramzus: I can admit that I'm horny just about 24/7

Queen died. I'm sad. :sadblue: End of an era.

I had honestly begun to suspect she was an automaton or immortal. I feel let down.

There's also the fact that they will have to change the notes and coinage to reflect the new head of state.
