I kinda agree with this guy, I don't watch alot of actual tv so I tend to miss new comics unless I look for them specifically. I'm pretty liberal but there are times, when I trully and absolutely detest some liberals. The sort this guy talks about in particular.

I have to call bullshit on this guy, and the right more generally, on multiple fronts.

This issue is really one of marketing. The right has quite successfully spread this idea that political correctness, of which cultural appropriation is a subcategory thereof, is a creature of the left. In reality, the right is very much against offensiveness, but only the kind that hurts their sensibilities and their sacred cows. The left does not have a monopoly on offensiveness sensibilities; from reactionary insults toward NFL players for kneeling during the U.S. anthem to calling it a "War on Christmas" because Starbucks changed their holiday cups or because a Wal-Mart greeter was caught saying "happy holidays" in December to be more inclusive, the right has on multiple fronts called for others to be mindful and respectful.

In the case of cultural appropriation, if the left, say, complains about a white person wearing a Native American headdress, the right swiftly dismisses and ridicules the notion as thin-skinned snowflakedness and cuckoldry. Yet if a person wears military regalia such as a purple heart or medal of honor that the person did not earn (or worse, if the person isn't even in the military), then they have committed "stolen valor," which in some circumstances could get you a federal misdemeanor. So popular is this notion that when the Stolen Valor Act of 2005 was struck down in 2012 by the Supreme Court, the legislature was quick to pass the Stolen Valor Act of 2013. Could you imagine if the left successfully made it a crime to appropriate the culture not of the military, which is the sacred and deified pet of the right, but of an ethnic minority? The right would lose its collective mind. I fail to see any real distinction between the two.

Moreover, the idea that one cannot truly ever "appropriate" anyone's ideas is belied by history. As Bill Maher joked in one of his New Rules segment, "Trump was 10 when Elvis burst on the scene, and while other people had made music like that before, only Elvis had the insight to do it while being white." What's distasteful about this is the historical context in which blacks found themselves in at the time and, to adding insult to injury, their cultural ingenuity was used to bolster one's success without giving any credit.

Overreactions of the left on the internet are a dime a dozen but there really isn't any evidence that this is some kind of pervasive or worrying trend of the left to a considerable extent, apart from the series of anecdotes that YouTubers have used to make their channels successful in just ranting and rambling about them, or a handful of insular college campuses. What we have currently in the culture is a complete dismissal of any of these concepts because they are associated with the craziest of liberals where we now even have complete groups of people like the transgender community being dismissed outright as just a mentally deranged group people protected and encouraged by political correctness.

I hear you on your points, I should mention, that Jonathan Pie is a fictitous character. The guys real name is Tom Walker a moderate liberal or classical liberal in his leanings.

He is one of several prominent British liberals, who has begun to speak out against the growing liberal establishment in the UK and western society in general. In esteemed company with the likes of Stephen Fry.

Much of his social commentary is satirical in nature.

This might give you a better idea of his motivations and political leanings.

Watched this the other day. I love the Sengoku Jidai period in Japan, when I discovered Anime, I got out of history class (where every lesson was focused on Britains effort in WW2) to go and study Japanese history in the library instead. Yeah, I was one of those kids!

But this was a well acted run down of the closing of that period in Japan. It's abit hazy on some of the details but I think it perfectly incapsulates the character of Tokugawa Ieyasu, a man I found infinately fascinating as a child.

The thing is, I see what both sides are saying  I get alot of what the far left is trying to do and say, that they aren't entirely wrong about some things and I get what the right are saying about some of the increasing intolerance, even if they are just as much to blame for being the same way but only now get to play the victim.

But I'm a moderate, left of center rationalist with a liking for stoicism. Both sides have lost the capacity or desire to debate, listen and consider, they are too busy trying to be right all the time and shut down any conversation that goes against their views and more and morepeople get swept up in the hyperbole, the politics and distractions from what really matters.

Nothing will change or get done, if no-one is willing to sit down and really try to understand one another. I respect people like Tom Walker, for trying to say that, even if they do so in a provactive and agitating manner.

A man I love for his oratory skill, wisdom and understanding.

I’m trying not to cry watching this reunion. Years ago I dreamed about them being lovers.

When you post in this thread, it's either something philosophical and interesting or something unbelievably stupid.

I wonder what his recommendations look like. He must be difficult for YouTube’s algorithm to pin down.
