Another blast from the past

Unread postby stuff » 26 September 2020, 21:45

Hello all. My name is Andrew, and I used to be on the old GTFN back in 2004 when I was 17, and stuck around for a few years. My name there was andofourteen. I'm 34 now. I ended up here since I had a random thought to look for the old forum, even though I was pretty sure it was gone, as I thought I'd tried that before.

I went to high school with the original founder of the forum, Insey/Cockmaster. He and I connected over a weird forum for our high school that made a huge splash for a few months until it got taken down. He brought me over to his site, which I participated in some, but I think probably not as much as some other people. I think a read a lot more than I posted, and eventually I may have only come on occasionally to look at pictures. Insey, which I believe was his actual real life nickname, and I never met in person for whatever reason. He was a grade behind me, so I didn't have much reason to know him offline. I do have a friend who knew him through the yearbook club, or something like that.

Some other things about me: I'm gay, I live in Philadelphia, I'm a research assistant in a university neuroscience/neuroengineering lab studying fruit flies, so basically I just breed, torture, and kill fruit flies all the time. More recently, I've joined the gay men's chorus and realized that I actually have a fairly good singing voice.

Hey Andrew, welcome (back)!

This is so cool! And you seem nice. Glad to have you with us! :keke:

What sort of neuroscientific stuff is your research on?
And neuroengineering... what does that refer to exactly? Makes me think of cybernetic brain implants. :runaway:

I say neuroengineering because my lab is in the biomedical engineering department. It's really just anything that would be engineering but for neuroscience purposes. My boss is actually just a neuroscientist, meaning he has a neuroscience degree, not an engineering degree. I actually got my degree in the same school in the same department where I'm now working, except mine is called "Biomedical Science," rather than engineering, because I don't have an undergraduate engineering degree. I honestly don't even know how to describe what my degree is in, haha. All the lines between science disciplines are getting blurred anyway, especially in neuroscience. You could have a neuroscientist, an engineer, a mathematician, a physicist, and a computer scientist all working on the same project. Maybe throw in a statistician as well.

Our lab focuses on things like locomotion (walking), olfactory processing (smells), with an emphasis on the neural circuitry and electrophysiology.

All of this makes me sound much smarter and accomplished than I really am. This is my first real adult job, which I started at age 33, and it's a job that's really meant for someone coming right out of college. Plus, all I've been dealing with for the last year that I've been there has been this one project that I don't care about, where I glue a fly to a pin, hang it in midair, and take video of it while it flails its legs around.

That's awesome - if I could do it all I again I would do a science degree for sure.

Also, I think Insey's irl name is Jordan and Insey is a play off his last name.

I hope you stick around!! We have sort of been going through a weird phase with all the new social platforms for LGBT people popping up now (ie reddit and discord) but we have perseverance and history on our side, which the other platforms lack--also a dedicated Admin team.

lolol that's funny he went Insey at school too and sort of online. I would have thought he would have been too paranoid to use his real nickname like that. Anyway, he was something else that's for sure lol.

Maybe that's why he changed it.

ohhhah that makes sense, he went by insey and then changed it to Master of The Cocks. I didn't remember that. I don't even know if I was there that early when he went by Insey but I remember people still called him that.

He was when I first got there, so if you were there before me then you would have been.

no idea you might have me beat. I think it was def my junior year of high school when I went to the site so that would have been 2002-2003 school year. I might have first went my sophomore year. I wish I knew because it would signal to me when I had finally really accepted that I was gay and was trying to find out more about the community. I always knew I was gay as soon as puberty (prob before that--I don't know--depends how you define "knowing" and stuff) but it took a few years for me to accept it - if that makes sense.

I know I got there in winter or spring 2004, my senior year. I know that's when the school site was up.

Wait do we know when the site was actually created? Rene prob does. I hope my dates are accurate. I know a lurked for awhile before I created a username--whether it was months or years, I am not sure. I remember I was the opposite of most people and I didn't really look at the pics - which I think you couldn't see unless you had a username.

Well the first snapshot in the wayback machine is from November 2003, but I don't know if that means anything.

That's crazy - good thinking with the wayback machine. If Nov 2003 is the month/year it was made then that would be my Senior year when I joined. I felt like it was a year before that but I could be totally mistaken.

Well it could have started earlier, and that's just the first entry they have there.

omg I am such an idiot - I just reread this thread - I thought you said you thought his real life name was "Insey". Looll that's soo funny. When you saw my post making the differentiation you were probably like, wtf lol. At the same time, I was like, wtf, who names their kid, "Insey"?

I'd argue it'd be a fairly cute little name for a kid. :3

Oh and I feel like I've been pretty sure the site was originally created in 2003, but I too may have based that on the WayBack Machine :D

Lol it is sort of a cute name!

Either way, if it was 2003 or 2004, that forum moved fast! Because I remember by the time I was there, there was a shit ton of content to lurk lol. It wasn't like a barebones forum at all. I'm starting to think I must have found it in 2004 during my senior year.
