Marrying a Serbian man

Unread postby Stuart67 » 23 November 2019, 13:48

HI, thanks for accepting me to the forum.
I am Stuart, aged 67 and I wanted to ask if anyone has any information about marrying a man from outside the EU?
I met a Serbian man and before I mention marriage, i want to know what the process would be, him coming to UK and staying here after marriage.
Please can anybody help. or have any info:

Many thanks and best wishes
Stuart xx

Hiya Stuart & welcome to GFO, by the way.

As far as the Wikipedia wrote, Serbia hopes to become a member of the EU in 2020. I don't know about the laws that apply for marriage in either, Serbia or the UK, but I would guess so that once you get married in the UK, he should get the EU citizen status along with this, in the process of moving to your place, wouldn't he? Depends on specific citizenship regulations and immigration law, probably.

In Serbia, you can't get married at all.
See Wikipedia article:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recogniti ... _in_Serbia

I think I've read an article about the lesbian couple that tried to get a legal right to form a partnership, but they were rejected.
So I guess you would have to marry him in the UK or any other EU country, Canada, USA, them like.

Fingers crossed ;)

Hi Stuart,

I am Serbian and unfortunately, gay marriage is illegal in Serbia and will probably be like that for a very long time. Although Serbia wants to join the EU, that is very unlikely to happen soon. I'm sorry I can't help when it comes to marrying outside of Serbia, as I am not familiar with the laws. Good luck!

To get married to a foreigner in the UK, I believe the foreigner generally needs to apply for a Marriage Visitor visa.

As an EU citizen who married an American, we found it much easier to get married elsewhere — in our case, in the US state of Connecticut, where we could simply get a hotel and go to a justice of the peace, without any annoying visa requirements.

Once married you're much better off relying on EU freedom-of-movement legislation than the much more restrictive UK equivalent. Until the UK actually properly leaves the EU, likely at the end of 2020, your marriage to a non-EEA citizen would mean that you could settle in any other EEA country, such as Ireland, and after living there for 6 months you could move back to the UK together.
