GFO Mafia - Basics / Interest

What is mafia?

Mafia is a text-based game where players are secretly assigned to either the Civilian/Town team, or the Mafia/Scum team. The Civilians are unaware of who is Civilian or Mafia, whilst the Mafia team are put into a group chat on somewhere like Discord.

The aim of the game is to uncover and lynch the Mafia members before they've killed enough civilians to make the number of Mafia members equal to that of the Civilians.

The game is split into 36-hour Day Phases, where everyone discusses evidence and decides who they wish to "lynch", based on who they believe is Mafia. Lynching may be called different things depending on the game, but the idea is the same - the player with the most votes at the end of the Day Phase is eliminated.

After Day, there is a Night Phase which lasts 12 hours, during which nobody posts in the game thread. During this time, the Mafia submit to the Host who they wish to kill, and other players with special abilities decide how they wish to use them. For example, the Protector/Doctor chooses who they wish to protect from a kill, and the Cop/Detective chooses who they wish to investigate to reveal their target's alignment to them.

If you want to know more, check out THIS ARTICLE for some easy game basics.

Also check out Mafia University, a subforum of strategy articles from Mafia Universe, the largest community of mafia players across the web. (They even have cool software that keeps track of votes and changes phases for you.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, GTF used to have a bustling little community of mafia players (we ran north of 30 games over the years!), and many have since branched off and played on other mafia sites. GTF was a regular invitee to the Mafia Championships, a tournament hosted by Mafia Universe each year in which a ton of communities are invited to send one representative to play for them, all with the goal of seeking who's the best mafia player across the internet!

I represented GTF three years in a row, and it deeply saddened me when GTF died out and we no longer sent reps to championships. I've since found my home in another community on Dark Lord Potter forums, but I thought it would be great to bring mafia to GFO and see if we can drum up some interest for a small game, and maybe be invited to the champs tournament next summer!

Mafia is so fun and a great way to put your problem solving and team building skills to the test. Plus it's always great to pull one over on your friends and lynch your enemies. ;)

This would also be a great opportunity to drag René and Brenden into mafia, since we always wanted them to come play with us on GTF. :P

If you'd like to express interest in playing, please /in below and I can compile a list of players, and I can figure out a basic setup from there. Optimally I'd love to run a small 13-player setup, with three mafia goons with no powers and maybe one cop and one doctor and the rest vanilla townies / roleless civilians. But depending on how many people express interest this can always change! I am totally flexible and open to the challenge. I've hosted many large shebang games and played in hundreds, so I'm also here if you have any questions about how the game works / strategies / etc. I will also post a set of rules whenever we come down to a final list of players and have an official start date.

Who's down? "/in" below!

Awww! Sorry we never did! Kinda wish we had, although I was and still am pretty busy most of the time, and right now we're on a 3-day journey to America to stay with our boyfriend for 17.5 days followed by Brenden's mom and stepdad for 12.5 days. :D

I guess I should register my interest at least...

How much of a time investment does this game usually take?

Well the thing is that the time period of the phases is fully customizable based on the needs of the host and the players. So for example, I could do 72/24 phases instead, so that you'd have three whole days to check in and post/vote during Day instead of it being a shorter 36 hours.

Otherwise, it'd be a bit more intensive in terms of time commitment if you had to definitely be around during a shorter 36 hour window. But the game itself would last longer if the phases were longer. So it's really up to what you'd be comfortable with. :)

I think, in order to draft 13 players, you’d need to sell this concept to about 150% of the users that post anywhere near daily.

Was that film not universally panned? Or are you suggesting that you’ll make Brenden watch it as punishment for making references that I didn’t understand?

I have decided I will play this game on the proviso that I can play the character of Jean Grey. Once in every night phase, the game master will roll the dice. If he rolls 6, Jean Grey will have an acute psychiatric episode and lose control of her powers. All the players will be disintegrated by an untempered telekinetic maelstrom, except for Wolverine. Who will be declared the winner.

I added a poll to the OP for preferred phase lengths so that people can weigh in on that as well.

There is no film. There is only a universally acclaimed animated TV show. I'm talking literally 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. It's a must-watch. :3
