Good books that every gay guy should read
Good books that every gay guy should read
The Charioteer Paperback by Mary Renault
Confessions of a Mask by Yukio Mishima
Forbidden Colors by Yukio Mishima
Christopher and His Kind by Christopher Isherwood
Maurice by E.m. Forster
I like books about homosexuality was consider underground because I find that the people then tend to have this strength and hardness about them.

Just because I'm gay I should have a special interest in literature with gay overtones?
That said, I do like Mishima. His private life was fucked up to hell and back though. Haven't read those particular works from him, but I have noticed his treatment of homosexuality.

No, I wasn't saying that. I will say that the reason I recommend those books because it's a good introduction of what's its like to be gay if you're coming to terms with being a homosexual.

The Brothers Karamazov comes highly recommended from this gay man. Get the Penguin Classics translation, it's more faithful to the original work.

I just recently finished reading that book. Every sassy gay man that I know of reminds of Grushenka; she was a major hardcore bitch, but I couldn't help but like her. I also had a huge lit-crush on Alyosha.
I recommend anyone who hasn't to read The Gormenghast Trilogy. Weird books; author had a dark vision of our psychological flaws projected on the outside of our bodies - though this isn't made immediate. He writes beautifully, almost like poetry. It is unlike anything I've ever read.
And since we've discussed gay-lit, we should all read the novel Faggots - just saying. Good book too.
"'You're critical of everyone,' observes Iris.
'Oh, not everyone,' says Clara in an offhand manner. 'Only everybody who's alive as well as most people who are dead. I feel quite neutral about anybody not yet born.'"

The Joy of Gay Sex I think is an absolute must read. It has all the information a gay needs, esp all the sections on disease. This book has it all, and with some nice illustrations

Yes, you should have a special interest in gay literature because it describes the sums of our experience. Literature especially is a brilliant window into the human condition.
OP: Giovanni's Room. Tragic little book

I suggest The Rainbow series by Alex Sanchez.
Those really helped me out when I was a young little questioning queer.
(excuse the BORING, COLORLESS font...I was reprimanded for turning my font a bold teal
by some person name something like Marmalade or Marmapoop...can't remember.
I didn't know all these colors to the right of where I'm typing were just for decoration...
So much for the gay flag being rainbow...I guess I'll stick to good ol' black and white...)

I made the Portuguese subtitles for this movie, it's excellent! I didn't like Matt Smith all that much with Doctor Who, but I definitely learned to appreciate him after watching this one.arcanepersona wrote:Christopher and His Kind by Christopher Isherwood
You know... You're under no obligation to stop using different colors just because Marmaduke doesn't like it lol. Do whatever you want.Nezqikvlogs wrote:(excuse the BORING, COLORLESS font...I was reprimanded for turning my font a bold teal

'Something Like Summer' by Jay Bell and all the sequels to it. A revolutionary novel for me.
All books by Riley Hart are spicy and enjoyable. I wish I had enough time to read all her work.

Re: Good books that every gay guy should read
I don't know if anyone's mentioned it but "My Queer War" is pretty interesting as well, an autobiography of the guy's times in the Army as a gay man (not sure if Army or Marine or Navy... I can never tell the difference). He gets very intellectual afterwards and has some pretty cool exchanges with big names.

Brokeback Mountain was a goodish book. I was confused when it ended like that.
