I've loved this song since I first heard, which was probably when I was around 14. It's continued to be one of the songs that I think really sums up my feelings and the overarching themes in my life. Sure, there's others, but this is one of the principal ones.

As does Billie Holiday in the song, I've always felt like I'm "reaching for the moon," and struggling to find, or achieve, something that I so desperately want, but which isn't easily had. I want to be the best version of myself I can be, and I want to be a good person, but these two aren't always easy and it can feel like I'm fighting an uphill battle. I've long struggled with chronic loneliness and feelings of being worthless; as a result, I've for years craved greater connection with my friends, new friends, and wanted to feel loved. Here again, then, I'm struggling to reach for something that feels so beyond me and outside of my grasp. I could go on, but I guess you probably have the idea of what I'm trying to say. I desperately long for things that I'll probably never have. And in this song I see Billie expressing a similar issue, and certainly her voice shows the listener exactly the pain and longing of it all.

Here's two other great songs from Billie that I frequently listen to (and that I can relate to):
