Whamageddon

Unread postby Magic J » 16 November 2020, 00:01

It's happened. Yesterday, I heard my first Christmas song. I'm calling it. Brace yourself, it's...

WHAMAGEDDON

Rules of the Game:

1. Avoid hearing "Last Christmas" by Wham! at all costs.

2. Make it to Christmas day without hearing "Last Christmas" by Wham!. If you survive until Christmas, be sure to post here to celebrate your victory.

3. The moment you recognise that you're hearing "Last Christmas" by Wham!, you have lost the game, and brought shame upon your entire family.

4. Upon being Wham'd!, you must post here telling everybody the circumstances of your Whamming!.

5. You may listen to cover versions of "Last Christmas". Only Wham! has the power to knock you out of the game.

6. You may trick others into listening to "Last Christmas" by Wham!, but best done in a hilarious manner. Cheap Whammings deserve scorn. Posting links to Wham! on this thread is a dick move. Don't be that guy. Doing so on other threads is, however, formally acceptable. It's anarchy out there.

Classic Whambushes include the "Drive by Wham!", in which "Last Christmas" is heard from a passing car, or the classic "Mass Whamming", in which whole shopping centres are simultaneously Wham'd.

I'm thinking that there will be more winnars this year, what with the virus and all. Odds of surviving Whamageddon look better than average. Expect a ramping up of the difficulty level come December 1st.

Good luck, and God's Speed.

Also, Christmas music hate thread. Post shitty Christmas songs and generally be curmudgeonly about the fact that people are playing them in November.

Thankfully, I mainly shop at ALDI and they don't play music in the store. I'm totally going to win this!

Same. My big worry is the work vans. Was Whamm'd by a colleague whilst driving back from site last year, two days before going on holiday. They even announced that they were going to play it, so I had an opportunity to avoid it by throwing myself from a van moving at 70mph. I didn't take that opportunity, and am ashamed. This year is my redemption. I swear it.

Trust nobody.

Maybe it's mostly a UK thing, but it's played goddamn constantly here over Christmas. It's bad.

I can't even remember a pre-Wham! period of my life. I was born in the Wham!, molded by it.

Same in the Netherlands. Christmas is/was mostly a religious thing there, but that song is definitely among my earliest memories associated with the holiday.

I don't hate it, however. 🙈

Last Christmas is probably the only Wham! song I will always remember just because I hear it on a near-constant loop for all of December and most of November, every damn year. It is everywhere. There is no escape.

It's not even a good song, either. There are so many way better Christmas songs yet Last Christmas gets included with the legit bangers, thus dragging down the overall quality of any Christmas playlist.

I had no idea wham sang it. The US has the version where Taylor Swift sings it. Hopefully nobody will start playing Christmas music this year. I'm pretty displeased with 2020 in general. I won't be able to be around family for the holidays because nobody wanted to stay home or wear masks. Holiday music will be taunting.

I got this one in the bag. It might have been harder if you included Mariah Carey.

Looks like cover versions are now popular abroad. UK is Wham! central over Christmas period.

We've traditionally promoted a Christmas music embargo until the last week of work, so hopefully the truce will hold until then. Sucks to hear you won't be able to see your family. :(

Was watching an old Top of the Pops a few hours ago, and fucking Wham! caught me by surprise. Luckily, it wasn't The Song. Still, very close call, I'm shook.

I think the only Christmas song that it would be utterly 100% impossible to avoid hearing all holiday season is Elton John's "Step Into Christmas" only because I love it so much that I will instinctively go out of my way to listen to it because it is the best Christmas song ever made.

These days now I don't work in a place that plays Christmas music over its speakers all day, avoiding Christmas music in general is a lot easier. But I will eventually just put a Christmas playlist on Spotify at some point, on shuffle and I will get Wham'd.

A pop band that was popular in the 80's, George Michael was in it. They have a Christmas song that's very popular over here, and it's nearly impossible to not hear it at least once before Christmas. Thus the game: avoid hearing the song. :P

Also, here is objectively the worst Christmas song ever made. By Mr. Blobby (a collective hallucination) and Noel Edmonds (former children's TV star, now a cult leader or something):

I've unfortunately heard "Last Christmas". I don't know--or care--if the version is the one discussed here. But I can say the version I've heard is something I've heard once too often. (But I could have said that the first time I heard it.)

I guess one plus to the pandemic: I'll be in stores a lot less this year, and, as a result, I'll hear awful Christmas songs a lot less.

I remember my high school biology teacher talking about how much he hated turning on the radio in his truck about this time of year, only to be assaulted by Christmas songs coming out of the speaker.

That's hard.

Little comfort, but I'm alone at holidays--and I often hate the holiday reminders. They can, indeed, be taunting.

I remember a college professor saying something about Christmas music with "going home for Christmas" themes would have huge impact the first year we weren't able to go home. (In my case, I'd say he was probably right, but forgot to mention that there is impact even after years of being alone on holidays.)

I sincerely hope next year will be better for you! (Even though "next year" feels like a lifetime away after 2020!)

If it’s any consolation, you’d have lost eventually. I was so tempted to commit whamicide and just phone you and play it down the line.

Netflix is compromised?! :runaway: I hadn't even thought of the preview tiles...
