Very interesting lecture although I would’ve added the rise in hentai consumption as influential to the decline in French cuisine over Japanese.

I loved that exasperated boomer lady in the Q&A, though. Now I wonder if Derek will trade in his brioche rolls for a melon bread or a pork bao in his never ending quest to become worker every day.

She’s slowly breaking.

I hope I get to see her change her mind before she dies.

Huh. Didn't realise that Theroux went back for another interview. Must be the third time, or something?

Damn, I was expecting that wild eyed fanatic stare of hers. None of that. Think it broke her already.

Familiar because you fell down that alt-right incel rabbit hole? Figures. I’ll take the blame for radicalizing you by my minority presence.

That was never my rabbit hole. My political awakening occurred well before alt-right was a thing. It's more that I recognize certain thought processes.

It all started when I began watching interracial porn and noticed that the producers were trying to condition women and bottoms into believing big dicks were more pleasurable.

So you were dick-pilled then. And now you’re the type of person who believes all dick sizes should be celebrated and want to pressure Men.com and Randy Blue to hire potbellied men with micro penises for purposes of “diversity” and “inclusion.” And then I come along and fight you on this front but rationalize my contempt not as prejudice toward small willies but just ethics in porn production.

It might be interesting to discuss seriously. My turn rightward didn't have much in common the alt-right. I was very alone in it, and I was never able to find a community that reflected my values back to me. I had to go to different places to indulge my interests in laissez-faire economics, gayness, and the sort of adolescent, Carlin-Hitchens-Harris-style shitposting I'd recognize today as "anti-SJW cringe content". I encountered some of the harder stuff, but it's interesting to note how all the "I used to be alt-right" videos cite their identities as gamers and their participation in those communities as the things that played the biggest role in radicalizing them. I always thought identifying as a gamer was stupid, and it was the gayness in particular that kept me on GTF and on tumblr. I'd cite tumblr as the thing that wore me down on cultural issues and got me to take topics like race and gender seriously. On the other hand, I just sort of talked myself out of the economics side after a while, a for a couple years I was simply apolitical. It was Trump's campaign in 2016 that finally led to me actually seek out a leftist perspective.

Tumblr is the most interesting part of that for me. When I started there I was genuinely annoyed by all the SJW stuff, but it was part of the package for anyone worth following. I stayed because the jokes made me laugh, and a combination of socialization and exposure eventually mellowed my views over a period of a few years. I think it happened there and not on GTF because the more dominant ideological strain on GTF was the kind of apolitical, edgy, free-speech stuff I associate with most internet forums from that era. Also, GTF had LP and he... wasn't a good influence.

I think the lesson to take away both from me and from the good former frogmen of youtube is that political content has to engage you on a social level. The alt-right recruits from gamers and other disaffected whites, and leftist content - the good content, anyway - appeals to a sense of humor and to a genuine curiosity towards history and philosophy. I can tell you from personal experience that no right-wing spaces have both.

But why do you think most alt-righters are gamers? The guy in the video started off somewhat apolitical as you seemed to have when getting hooked on tumblr blogs and as you say the exposure eventually conditions you a certain way. But why did this occur most prominently among gamers and not other groups the same way? And why do you think rightwing spaces suffer from intellectual curiosity?

That's a complicated question. I don't think there's a single reason why gamers prove so reactionary, both as recruits of the alt-right and as instigators of Gamergate shit. The alt-right apostates frequently insinuate that they were targeted by the alt-right as a matter of political strategy. I think the simpler answer is that the alt-right found a home at the specific confluence of internet subculture, asociality, and lily-white demography. A lot of young people don't have a lot going on in their lives, and the gamer identity is one of the few things that can provide a young, white, straight guy with a (pseudo) political framework. In the absence of a satisfying and inclusive left-leaning cultural narrative - something I think is very real and a very big problem - there's a lot of space for reactionary politics to come in.

Bloodless neoliberal politics play a role here. To a gamer, their only political awareness might be that obnoxious purple-haired feminists want to take their vidya away. This isn't a fair representation of that cultural issue, but it's worth noting how little mainstream liberals relate to young people's experiences. To those liberals, the ennui and atomization that defines the lives of so many today cannot be a material sickness. Theirs is a worldview made up of bad actors, good actors, and nothing else. They can't imagine how a reactionary worldview offers people something they don't, namely an explanation for why they feel so shitty and aimless without concluding that they, a non-oppressed class, are one of those bad actors and deserve to feel the way they do. I'm definitely rambling now.

And why do you think rightwing spaces suffer from intellectual curiosity?

An intelligent person can be conservative if he's a humorless asshole, and someone with a personality can be conservative if he's stupid. I mean, that's such a dumb and simplistic way of putting it, but it describes something that's very real, for me at least. When I was right-wing, there were always left-wing people I respected because they had personal virtue as well as intellectual or creative insight. But what right-wing person does that describe? I can't think of any. Like sure, salt of the earth conservatives can be fine people, but a major cultural figure? There's something that prevents that from happening. It's why teenage me never found a community I could really participate in, and I struggled with a dissonance I was only able to really recognize in retrospect.
