Eurovision 2017

Unread postby Tony » 23 January 2017, 20:13

Since Chris hasn't created a thread for this year yet, I have decided to create one. This year, Eurovision will take place in Kiev, Ukraine on May 13th.

The UK's Eurovision 2017 hopefuls have been announced today, and they are all X Factor alumni. The acts will battle it out this Friday (January 27) on Eurovision: You Decide, which airs on BBC Two at 7.30pm.

If you live in the UK, you can listen to the songs here http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04qg88c :)

I found some videos on YouTube, for the non-UK members.

Which one is your personal favourite?

He sounds like he's on helium! :-) A big ballad sounds great for Ireland, it might be what Ireland needs.

Blast you, Tony! I was going to do this yesterday, but I forgot.

I haven't heard all the songs yet, but I've read that they aren't that great. Some things never change.

He is cute as fuck. Now he just needs a song that suits his voice.

As for the UK candidates... No cute ones this year :( . I'll just wait for the winner before listening to any of the entries.

I quickly listened to the UK candidates. I probably need to hear them again in full, but from what I heard I'd say it's between Salena and Danyl. I'm not enamored with any of them though, truthfully.

I don't know why we take it so damn seriously every year and just do boring cheesy ballads. When I think "Eurovision", the acts that always stand out to me personally are the crazy energetic ones.

We're not going to win anyway, it's no secret all the Eastern countries vote for eachother politically, so we might as well just have fun with it.

Lucie Jones will represent the UK in Ukraine after winning Eurovision: You Decide, with her ballad Never Give Up on You.

It's quite meh. It's not a bad song, but it is quite generic and forgettable.

Of course the last years winner was really bad so nothing would surprise me.

I'm glad we've got a boring song. At least this way I won't get my hopes up like last year.

It's good to have low expectations. Lucie Jones’ Eurovision entry is co-written by a former contest winnerEmmelie de Forest, who won in 2013, with her song Only Teardrops.

So maybe the UK might actually have a ghost of a chance of doing well this year :thumbsupwink:

The Italian Eurovision entry this year is kinda/totally barmy. It has a dancing gorilla  ; about halfway through the performace, a man in an ape costume joins him on-stage.

Apparently Eurovision fans are loving it, within minutes of the Italian voters making their selection, odds on a victory for the nation dropped from 66/1 to 6/1.

I can't find the performance on YouTube, so here is a link provided on the offical Eurovision website: http://www.raiplay.it/video/2017/02/Fra ... a7254.html

I just read that Eurovision 2017 faces huge walkouts as a whopping 21 members of the Eurovision Song Contest's organisers have quit after clashing with a new boss running the show.

O, does that mean we don't have to listen to off-pitch singing artists this year? :awesome:

By the way: Those sisters (O'G3NE) represents the Netherlands this year.

The first two parts of our national selection were yesterday & today - the final is going to be next week. At least this year we have some better songs to choose from. And of course a crappy song will win yet again.

The whole thing was hosted by three slightly crazy women who took the piss out of everything. There was swearing, wanking gestures and they insulted pretty much every contestant with their jokes. Then they insulted the viewers as well. It was both cringe worthy and amusing. This would definitely not be allowed on prime time television on the national channel in most countries.

To the songs....

My favorite that got into the final:

(I am a sucker for cute boys of course)

I liked and got into the final category:

They are both a bit dated though and wouldn't do well.

Ok.

OMG how didn't this get into the final category:

They give me such a Nigtwish vibe and were my favourites. It's only natural that they didn't get into the final.

Slightly crazy, modern vibe with a cute singer on top.

We all need to remember one thing. I like them, which means that none of them will be selected.

Does it have anything to do with tanks on the border? Finally, a reason to embrace Russian imperialism.

This guy seems to be the fan favourite. I haven't listened to his song but looks-wise he reminds me of the Finnish lads from 2014, to whom I seem to remember you also took a liking.

Drum roll please... we did it again

I promised drama. And drama was delivered. I present to you... our winner:

Yes, I like the song. But it shouldn't have won. As always in this country, the jury voting pretty much fucked everything up. BQL got the most votes from televoting but yet barely got any votes from the juries. The flame war has already erupted over social media and it's pretty obvious why.

In other news... Jamala performed her song during the interval act.

EDIT: This says it all:

BQL is actually a duo. Him and his older brother. And they are both quite cute.

And yes. I definitely liked the Finnish guys, though the actual songs are not similar.
