Aside from Euron's extremely frustrating immunity to good writing, this episode seemed like a return to GoT form. I felt queasy for most of it. Honestly, this is why the long night had to end sooner rather than later.

Also, A+ acting for Emilia Clarke this week. I'd normally give her about a B-.

Why can the writers not keep to character anymore? Cersei Lannister, the woman who levelled the sept of Baylor and surrounding neighbourhood simply to avoid a trial, has literally everyone she needs to kill to avoid a war and cement her position stood well within her grasp and just lets them all walk away?

I thought the scene with Brienne crying was fucking weird. Martin’s writing may not have been amazing but at least it wasn’t all over the place. What the hell are they doing?

This series is just annoying, it’s like it was written by someone else on short notice. Someone who was just given the instruction “we can only afford 7 more episodes, don’t ask us how, the writers have all gone missing, you have a MacBook, just get it wrapped up however you want”

But that scene at the gates of Kings Landing, that was just...what the fuck even was that scene? I get it, Cersei’s story arc is screaming out for some reconciliation and redemption, but this was such a clumsy fucking way of planting the seed in our minds that there’s still a bond between Cersei and Tyrion. It’s completely shown their hand. Cersei, the cutthroat botch we all love, uses those dozen siege crossbows to kill that dragon 10 times out of 10. Not have an emotional moment with her brother and then kill the translator and somehow leave satisfied.

Here’s Cersei’s story for those that wanna have it spoiled;

Cersei loses the capital and she loses her unborn child, we’ve seen the child being lost ever since we remembered that Lady Olenna said Cersei was too old to have children anymore. Dany wants to kill her to make an example, Tyrion champions keeping her prisoner in the red keep. There’s going to be some Iron Bank involvement in the decision to keep her alive. I actually think the golden company might betray her on the bank’s orders and that’s how she loses everything. The Iron Bank maybe approach Dany and be like “we’ll give you the city, but we want House Lannister to pay what it owes and it can’t if Cersei is dead.” But I digress. On visiting her, Tyrion and Cersei have as close to a reconciliatory moment as those two characters can have, Cersei tells Tyrion she knows he didn’t kill Joffrey and we finally see Cersei process the loss of Tommen and accept that she played a large part in it. They both leave the room, Tyrion first though the door and then Cersei after through the same window Tommen jumped out of.

BET ME, TELL ME IM WRONG. I DARE YOU.

Well that was... cool to watch, I guess? Or maybe it would have been in a version of the show where we got ten or more so episodes to justify the decisions made here?

IDGAF about Jaime's arc. I always thought he was irredeemable, and I think it made sense what he did. The part that didn't make sense to me was when he abandoned her in the first place. I mean, I assumed he gave all those "fuck everyone who isn't us" speeches for a reason. I always thought he was entertaining but I have no idea what all those "best character arc" people are talking about.

I wish we got more screen time with Cersei. Her arc seemed to wrap up at the end of season 6 in complete nihilism, and it didn't really budge. But that season 6 episode was so satisfying. It had so much build up. Since then she only existed as a foil for Dany, and it's disappointing because she was such a good character, but I guess the writers had nowhere else to go with her.

To date the only good thing about Euron is that he's dead now.

Cleganebowl barely makes sense within the context of the show. The Hound's arc was the time he spent with Arya. The big showdown felt very cheesy to me.

Dany's actions make sense if you write out the events like a flowchart, but they still feel incredibly wrong. They all but stated that she has gone insane... but she was sane three episodes ago. She was a character who struggled with moral questions, who was self-aware, self-knowing, who was invested in an image of herself as someone who tries to do the right thing. But now she's done something even her father didn't do, and it's horrible to witness, all the more so because it's so sudden, and the methods they used to get her to that point were gimmicky.

I thought Tyrion's moments were good and I think Varys' thing was... ok. Of all the characters he seemed to have the best ability to recognize what's what and act accordingly.

All said and done, it was an impressive feat of cinematography, and I don't have any faith that the ending will be good or satisfying.

For some reason the writers of tv shows have a terrible way with ending them. It's like that with every show. I remember the whole last season of Dexter. Ugh. I had to rewatch it just to make sure it was actually that bad. :D

End rant...

What was the point in building up these main characters with so much depth, history and intrigue only to be unceremoniously killed off like some peripheral character?

The actors are probably being held hostage by their contracts. I imagine GRRM is too. But it's pretty clear how they're feeling.

Get this... HBO wanted them to make the last two seasons 10 episodes each like the others. (Actually, HBO wanted to do 2 more seasons.) And they offered them plenty of budget to make it happen. Dumb & Dumber rejected this.

And you know where they plan to be when the final episode is released?

USA Today wrote:“I plan to be very drunk and very far from the internet,” Benioff said during an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly.

[...]

“We’ll be in an undisclosed location, turning off our phones and opening various bottles,” Weiss told EW. “At some point, if and when it’s safe to come out again, somebody like will give us a breakdown of what was out there without us having to actually experience it.”

They know they fucked up. And they don't give a shit.

My Cersei ending was totally better. I should be writing scripts for HBO.

Sign the petition to HBO: Remake Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers.

When I signed it last night it had around 150,000 signatures. It's now approaching 300,000 :P

What do you guys think of this rewrite of the Battle of Winterfell?

How do you tie Jamie’s role to this? Does he find her body on his way to the Red Keep? Does he kill himself after realizing he has no reason to live any longer? Does he begin crying and then cackling with laughter like the Joker in a DC movie?

I'm resigned to the fact the last season will never live upto expectation, mine or anyone else.

Not sure if that's due to the extremely high expectations or the rushed nature of plot.

Dany going mad does make sense, but the speed at which it happens :pfft:

Cant fault the action though, it had me on the edge of my seat in The Bells.

The actor who plays Bran called it ridiculous and the one who plays Greyworm said it was rude. Imagine if HBO, erm, bends the knee as it were and goes through with a remake? They’re going to have to eat their words.
