Making friends

Unread postby bent4life » 3 June 2019, 20:25

Hi,

I have an important question to ask, hopefully some of you can help.

How can one make friends or build relationships in their local gay community, when they have major medical issues?

For example, what happens if you have to have transplant surgery, then are required to take medication that weakens your immune system? You don't have HIV, but you have to be extremely careful doing certain things. For example, you can't do hookups, and other things.

Thanks.

I don't see how that would affect making friends, unless you mean it affects day-to-day life beyond sex, like you can't really go anywhere or do anything.

Get offline, first of all. You need to go seek out interest groups where you can speak to people with common interests, and go from there. You can find some online actually, but go where you can meet people in-person.

Unfortunately, it does affect day-to-day life, for quite a bit of time. Besides that, there aren't any active interest groups in the area. Virtually all LGBTQ+ groups in the area, haven't had any activity or meetings for an extended amount of time. You can see (online) that there are only a couple of members and the last thing they did was 3 years ago, when their webpage was last updated. The only one that is active is for twinks under 35 years old.

Have you tried looking for LGBT groups on Meetup.com? If not, I'd suggest searching for some lgbt groups there and start participating in activities. For example, last night there's a group that simply put together a campfire on the beach yesterday evening. I've found one for motorcycle rides so there is an example of finding something your interested in (or able to participate in) and lgbt oriented. Having some common ground is the basis of any friendship.

Thanks mxguy01!

I wasn't aware of meetup.com. I found a bunch of the same lgbt groups on other websites. There's one on there that I hadn't found, which seems to be a really active group. :)
