Eurovision 2016

Unread postby c1ask0 » 17 November 2015, 08:20

We have our first proper news, which is that Australia will be competing again this year, albeit they will have to participate in the semi-finals this time.

What do you think about the news? I think it's alright, but to be honest we have to accept it whether we like it or not! It seems they are here to stay, so perhaps other countries will join in the coming years. New Zealand, anyone?
Don't think about doing it tomorrow. You won't do it tomorrow. Do it today.

I don't think its a bad thing. I mean, Israel and other non-European countries are eligible. I wouldn't like to see too many countries, though. Perhaps only Australia/NZ.

Anyway, I enjoyed last year but it was very ballad fueled. I'm hoping the exact opposite this year, and I suspect because of last year, many countries will return to weirdness.

We settled their island; our Queen is their Queen. I think they're European enough.

I also wouldn't mind seeing Canada join the European Union.

We've got such a big Eurovision culture, it's cool that we've been invited back, especially seeing as it's been pretty much on par with big sporting events for popularity over here for the last few years.

Can't imagine New Zealand would join, we tend to claim any of their talent as our own if they get big. Maybe a joint ticket would be cool though, team up an Aussie and a Kiwi as a double act (*cough Gotye and Kimbra*). My bet would be South Africa if any other country joined, or maybe Brazil.

I really hope we send Sia this year, she's got the right mix of weirdness and talent to do well at Eurovision, but I don't think her record label would let her now that's she's a huge American hit. :( Knowing how these things go we'll probably just send over another Idol winner, or an ex-Neighbours bird.

I agree — she's my favourite singer, and she's got the right kind of weirdness, in my mind, as opposed to, say, Lady Gaga. :P

Fair point, after all we're still in the British Commonwealth, might as well use the Commonwealth for something! It's also got a lot to do with our expat Euro communities which are pretty massive. Eurovision airs on the multicultural public broadcaster SBS which is largely targeted at these communities, and has traditionally been watched because people want to connect with and support their family's homelands.

But regardless, we'll take any excuse for a party! :awesome:

Exactly! And whatever happened to Lady Gaga? I feel like she got out-weirded by Miley Cirus and just dropped off the radar completely.

I agree that I don't think it's a bad thing. I guess their involvement in future contests (after 2016) is still being decided. If they do win next year, there's a chance that it might be held in the UK.

I really do hope there are more upbeat songs during the 2016 show.

‎ I was thinking the same thing so I looked into it. Recently it seems she ‎released a collaborative jazz album with Tony Bennett titled Cheek to Cheek‎, joined  American Horror Storyand is working on her 5th  album‎.

I think it is very doubtful that you will send anyone who is remotely famous on a global scale. I guess the record labels would see it as too great a risk. Plus, we wouldn't want you winning now, would we? ;)

I agree with Chris that sending Sia is very very unlikely. I think she is far too big for the show, it's like if the UK were to send Adele or One Direction, I just can't see that ever happening. I just read that Jessica Mauboy, from Australian Idol, could be a possible contestant for AUS.

That would make sense actually. She already performed as an interval act during the 2014 contest.

Anyhoo, I'm not going to get worked up over this for now. It's still a whole six months away. We've got to get through Christmas first!

Beginning early this year, are we?
Though I think we did begin around december on GTF last year.

Awesome! I don't care who they send as long as they are good... and possibly young and hot.

So much this!
There were a few good ones in the semi-finals this year but they sadly didn't make it through. I hope this will change. At least an upbeat song won the damn thing.

Germany has selected a homophobic piece of shit as contestant(who also loves conspiracy theories against vaccinations and his nationalist views). Yay. If that wasn't bad enough, his music is also absolutely snore-inducing.

On the plus side, you can't do any worse than last year. ;)

Germany withdraws Eurovision contender Xavier Naidoo after lyrics backlash.

Critics had accused the singer of using anti-Semitic and homophobic slurs in his songs.

Speaking of Eurovision. We were third on the junior Eurovision this year! I know it's not Eurovision 2016, but it is somewhat related.

That's putting things lightly. He's a fundamentalist Christian - the only famous one in Germany I believe. One of his songs is directed at child molesters and includes the line "why can't you just like pussy like the rest of us?". That's far more than a mere slur. He also performs at Neonazi events and publicly endorses multiple conspiracy theories, including an effort to stop parents from having their kids vaccinated. It's hard to pick somebody worse to represent the country internationally.

Eurovision just confirmed that 2016 will feature a record 43 countries, with Ukraine, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Belgium all make their Eurovision return.
