NASA Press Conference Stream

Unread postby Muspelli » 23 July 2015, 15:07

Here's a link to a website that will be streaming the press conference NASA is holding today at Noon EDT (55 minutes from now) regarding extremely recent discoveries regarding extrasolar Earth-like planets.

Speakers will include:

John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington
Jon Jenkins, Kepler data analysis lead at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California
Jeff Coughlin, a Kepler research scientist at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California
Didier Queloz, a professor of astrophysics at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom

Given NASA tends to just release information regarding new planetary discoveries as articles on their website and in journals, this is probably something a bit more interesting than the usual stuff.

It's started as of seconds ago. Updated the link to the official NASA website.

John Grunsfeld: "Are we alone in the universe? We're going to take one small step in answering that today."

John Grunsfeld: "Today we're announcing the discovery of an exoplanet that as far as we can tell is a pretty close cousin of Earth. It's the closest so far."

"It's Earth 2.0."

Try going to uStream's website and finding the stream on there. I think they limit the viewers for each imbedded player but not on their website.

Same "at capacity, please purchase premium access" error, unfortunately. Thanks for the tip though. :)
I'm sure there will be tons of articles written and the conference will be available on youtube after, so it's ok.

Live-blogging summary of the news as it comes is available here.

The stream seems to be down at the moment. :(

Key quotes so far:

Jeff Coughlin: Kepler 452B is the "first rocky, possibly inhabitable planet around a Sun-like star."

Jon Jenkins: Kepler 452B is 1.5 times the size of Earth - so it's likely to be rocky. It's also the right distance from its star to potentially be inhabitable.

John Coughlin: Geologists looked at the data and found that there was a possibility that there are active volcanoes on the surface of the new planet.

Jon Jenkins: The sunshine from Kepler's star is very similar to sunshine from our own star, and plants could be able to photosynthesise just the same.

"It would feel a lot like home."

Jon Jenkins: Years on Kepler 452B are the same length as they are on Earth.

Jon Jenkins: It's spent billions of years in the habitable zone of its star - that means it could well host life on its surface, or could have at some point in its history.

Jon Jenkins: The size of the new planet's orbit is similar to Earth's, and its solar system is very similar to our own.

...

Jon Jenkins: Asked: "Could we survive in gravity twice our own?"

"We could adapt, and might potentially become more stocky over many generations."

Won't be no twinks on this planet, then, Pooler. Don't get your hopes up.

I'll be normal! ... wait, no, I'll get even stockier. :(

Artist's conceptions of Kepler 452B based on estimated properties:

And a NASA-produced diagram of all known small planets located in their star's Goldilocks zone:

EDIT: The conference is now over. When asked whether there are currently radio-receiving telescopes pointing towards Kepler 452B now, the panel's response was an excited 'God I hope so!' Given the peculiar things we've found with radio telescopes in the past, I would hope they get on that quick.

So these scientists found hell. Interesting.
Blow: "Nowadays even Liam can release an album of his screechy vocals and it'll probably go #1..."
Ramzus: I can admit that I'm horny just about 24/7
homomorphism: I used to not think your name was deshay and that Erick was just being racist
Hunter: sometimes I think I was literally born to be a pornstar
