It's going to be an interesting few days on social media.

Already so far I've seen "he was racist so good riddance", "he was rich so it's not like we should feel bad for the family" and "the monarchy shouldn't exist so it's good there's one less of them now."

I don't want the monarchy to exist and obviously don't personally know any of them. But I also remember how much it fucking sucked when my grandpa died. And how hard it was to my see my grandma deal with that pain. And how much it then also sucked when she died. Or when my uncle died.

You don't need to like someone or approve of them or anything they stand for to just not be a dick about it when they die. But it seems a depressing amount of peoples' first reaction is do some weird petty victory lap about an old man dying.

Plus it's funny that so many of the people on my social media timelines playing the "one less racist in the world" are the same pricks who used to vote for UKIP a few years ago so fuck them for hypocrisy.

Mao Zedong had 10 children. Stalin had 4 children. Were we not supposed to celebrate the world being rid of them?

Humans tend to have children. Children feel bad about parents and elders' passing. It shouldn't make one iota of difference.

Philip was an adulterer and emotionally abusive father to adulterous and paedophilic children. Good riddance.

His one job, for which he gets to live one of the most privileged lives possible to a human being, was to be the faithful spouse of a monarch and good father to the next. He couldn't even do those simple tasks, yet he revelled in his privilege.

Okay this is just going to be another thread I ignore because if you're going to compare Prince Phillip to dictators who murdered millions then clearly 'nuance' is not a factor in your thinking on this subject either so I'd rather not get sucked into a toxic fucking debate there will never be an end of.

That said, I do feel sad for the Queen. And sad for the country, I bet ole Liz wont be far behind. It always happens. One goes and without them, so does the other.

They're both old as balls and I'm surprised it hasn't happened earlier. Good thing British royalty don't really have a lot of responsibility in the actual affairs of the country.

You’d think all of that wealth and resources would have refined him. How can his views about others be so dim like the skin of an Indian or slitty-eyed like a chinaman?

By the way, for anyone who watched the interview with Meghan and Harry and remember when they said one of the royals was concerned about how dark the child would be, is it any wonder? It’s clearly the ghost of Diana.

I resent that it's news any time one of these assholes does something so inconsequential as dying. What an awful country. At least our celebrity culture focuses on attractive actors and not inbred krauts whose ancestors had the most bogs.

I agree. The royals should be replaced by hot actors and should step down as soon as they get too old—around 25.

The BBC received over 100,000 complaints over the weekend, the most in its history, about its wall-to-wall coverage of Philip and cancellation of all other programming Friday and Saturday.

They took BBC Four off air completely, with a message saying to turn to BBC One or Two. (They’d have done the same with BBC Three, which was their channel for young people, except they axed it a few years ago because fuck young people.) I hear they even had a black bar across the bottom of CBeebies, their channel for toddlers and small children, informing of the death and advising to tune in to BBC One; so now tens of thousands of parents are possibly going to have to explain the concept of death to their toddlers.

I agree - he was a nut - and I loved that. I'm sad he's gone. Sometimes, some people are just so out of touch with the rest of the population you just have to laugh.

To be fair, I haven't looked into him very deeply at all or the royal family at that. I think they're all sort of crazy and I don't think they should get money from taxpayers but I'm not an English resident.

I feel like Royalty play a pretty vital role as state sanctioned role models, where people can point to them and say "THIS. This is how a true Englishman must act and regard himself." otherwise people start rummaging around in the garbage for Kardashians or something to base their personalities on.

So you’re saying that without them they’d be worse?
