Supreme Court legalizes gay marriage nation-wide

I'm sure this won't be the first you've all heard of it today, but it seems like the topic should exist anyway.

Truly wonderful. There is of course still a lot of work to be done, but today is no day for cynicism. A massive victory.

This is amazing and brilliant, and watching homophobes go into a frenzy about it is going to be just as amazing to watch.

Great to see it finally happen. Watching change in the US is always infuriating because it tends to happen on a state to state basis rather than one big event, but hey, this ended up happening rather quickly!

What was the last big issue you watched happen on a state to state basis?

Health insurance subsidies/regulation. Single-payer healthcare. "Confederate" flag public-display removal.

That's a nice thing to see. Though I am regretting reading the news on one of our news sites. Not because of them specifically but because of the comments. Some of them ruined my day.

All the while our constitutional court has yet to decide whether or not to allow the referendum proposed by our anti-gay fucks. It reached that after government passed the marriage equality law. Then the anti-gay nutjobs called for a referendum on the issue. And the government said that there can be no referendum because that would violate the constitutional rights of gay individuals. So everything will be decided by the court in the near future. If this goes to the referendum then I am pretty sure that it's gonna fail.

And since our government has a spine made out of rubber and basically goes with what other countries are doing... Let's just say that the US decision could have some impact on the decision here.

I wonder how long it'll take to become effective in all states (I learned today, apropos of Supreme Court rulings, that they had to send in the army to enforce desegregation back in the 60s).

People in Alabama starting getting married minutes after the decision was announced. It's not like courthouse clerks are going to start standing in doorways.

I wasn't suggesting that the army would be needed to bust clerk heads, but I wouldn't be surprised if in some places (however few) they refused to perform the function; and if so, how long for any such resistance to fade away.

I'm expecting at least one state to issue a legal challenge on really shaky ground (probably going to be one of the Southern ones, probably one who has a governor running for President on the Republican side and who wants to boost his image with his base voters) which will be summarily thrown right the fuck out, and then eventually it'll settle down to a "let's just bitch about on Fox News and get angry on Twitter" level of resistance.
