Can I use the F word?

Unread postby AngeloDarkness » 20 June 2020, 11:25

Hey, I’m new to this forum, but I made an account to ask some gay guys this. *Trigger warning: strong language*

First, a bit of background:
I was born male, and for the first 15-16 years of my life I thought I was as a gay guy. Then I realized Im actually genderfluid around 16. When I identified as a gay guy, I used the word “F*gg*t” in a positive light, to re-claim the word, like saying “I’m a f*gg*t and I’m proud to be me!” (I didn’t know the history behind the word, but I learned about it in the last year) Now that I don’t identify as a gay guy, is it still okay for me to identify as a f*g, and can I still reclaim the word? What do you guys think?

I'm not from an English-speaking country myself and can't really comment on your question, but I will just say that on this forum there's no need to self-censor words like that or to issue trigger warnings about them. You're definitely not going to get banned or have your posts deleted for your choice of words if you're not purposefully upsetting anyone, which you very clearly aren't. :keke:

You'd probably get a few very different answers. The Gay Council is still deliberating on the matter, and have yet to issue a formal statement. :P

Personally, I have little problem with the word itself. Naturally, I dislike it when it's used as a slur to demean people. The self referentially mocking way it's often used is fine to me. I'd say it's pretty much free reign for any queer person, since the
sort of people who find themselves using "faggot" as an insult generally don't distinguish. So yeah, I think you're fine to refer to yourself how you wish.

I tend not to say it in polite company, though. These things can be a bit sensitive for some people. Used the term "dyke bar" once and people were not amused.

Incidentally, you tend not to hear it so much where I am. I've only really heard it used as the "re-claimed" term. The insult of choice is generally "poof", which really doesn't have the same blunt force to it. :P

I suppose that may have something to do with the fact that in British English, a 'fag' is a cigarette? :P

There are no laws with language (except the ones in your country regarding holocausty things, watch out for that). Some gay men might be okay with you calling them faggots, others might not. I say racist things to my friend Erick, but only because he likes it.

Don't you have the "fighting words" precident in the US? Think I remember reading somewhere that there's an established legal defence against assault, whereby the defendant can claim that the person they assaulted had insulted them so grievously that they had no option but to attack them.

And to bring it back to the topic, I think if somebody did happen to call you a faggot in a manner intended to insult you, then a punch directly to the face may reasonably be the appropriate response. :P
