When do you stop using condoms?

Unread postby jaredjoy90 » 5 January 2022, 19:54

I am personally in a category thats either never or after a few dates. Usually if a condom is used while I am having sex its my partners decision. I can't remember ever asking a partner to put a condom on.

I prefer not to use them, obviously. But I use them outside of monogamous relationships, with partners whose status I'm in the dark about.

I'd be lying if I said I hadn't taken risks in the past. Or if I said I wouldn't do so again at some point.

But I try to be consistent and safe and so far I have been fortunate.

Worrying that STI's are on a huge increase right now.

You have two Nevers in there. You might like to review the questions and answers in the thread title and poll. :)

I never use condoms and have rarely done so in my life, but then, I've only really had sex with guys I was already exclusive with. I've only ever had sex with my husband (when we were already engaged or married) and our boyfriend (polyamorous, 3-way exclusive).

It's worth noting there are very common (strains of) STIs that can bypass condoms (and in some cases can also be spread by oral sex), some of which can't be cured. The long-term consequences of these infections are poorly understood but seem to variously include increased risk of developing many kinds of cancer as well as dementia (Alzheimer's Disease) later in life.

HPV vaccination (ideally using a 9-valent vaccine, the best currently available) offers partial protection. Everyone should really get that as well as hepatitis A and B vaccination, while also using condoms, and PrEP should be considered. But even with all that, sex with anyone who has (had) sex with others is a risk that needs to be considered carefully.

I wasn't aware there was a vaccination that could help, I will look into that, thanks !

In Scotland all these vaccines are free for gay men. :) Hopefully it's similar where you live!

I have hardly ever used condoms in my sex life, unless the top has requested to. I have always loved bareback I'm a huge fan of ass to mouth and love cum in my bum lol.

I typically did three dates / got to no someone in the past before taking it in the bum, but did a few grindr meets in my time.

Now with a partner.

Generally i have insisted that the top wears one, there have been times when I have gotten carried away and been fucked bare. I do have a good friend I have know for 10 years now and when we do hook up its always with out condoms albeit both tested.

I had to say I never use them because I have genuinely never used one. Though having said that, it is quite rare that I actually have sex with anyone anyway.

I would use one if I was concerned that the other person might have an STI, or if they wanted to.

There is an AIDS epidemic in Russia and you'd be fucking crazy if you didn't use a condom every time. (Which most people don't which is why there is an epidemic  )

I don't think it's THAT much safer in the west so I find y'all's responses shocking to be honest

(That said when I was 20 something I did it without a condom a couple times because I was retarded :|)

I don't know how bad it is in Russia, but I would say it's totally out of control among gay/bi men in the US too. Especially among minority ethnic groups. Lifetime HIV risk among gay/bi men in the US is estimated at ⅙ overall; for Latinos it's ¼, for African-Americans ½.

I.e. half of gay/bi black men in the US are expected to be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetime. It's insane. 1/6 risk is already insane given that this is a totally preventable infection.

As you would expect, rates of other STIs are very high here as well.

Things are nowhere near this bad in other "Western" countries like the UK, where HIV diagnoses in gay and bisexual men at now at a 20-year low (of <2,000 cases a year in a country with 67,000,000 people overall) while sexual-health services are very widely offered and free for everyone. It is thought to be a realistic goal for HIV transmission to be basically wiped out in the UK by 2030.

Being sexually promiscuous — especially in a place like the US, and especially without consistent condom use, but also with — seems crazy to me.

This is all true, but while HIV is on the decrease in the UK, there is a massive surge in other STI's. Gonorhoea in particular has been on the increase with a massive 26% jump in 2018 over the previous year, prior to the covid pandemic. Understandably, figures show a drop in 2020, but those figures are expected to rise again.

That is very worrying and deserves much more attention, especially since treatments like antibiotics and antivirals get less effective over time as germs develop resistance, and since they can all evolve into more harmful, more easily transmissible and/or harder-to-treat strains, with every added host providing more opportunity to do so.

Usually I drop the condom after three months being monogamous with a person and after taking a test. Isn't that hard. But I'm not going to pretend I've never done things out of lust in the moment. For those instances I went and got post-exposure pills at the clinic, which I then took for 30 days to avoid HIV.

I got my first HPV shot last month and am gearing up for PrEP (takes a while to get called in here, since so many people are seeking it), so I might get a little sluttier in the future, but I'm not counting on it. Plus I don't want syphilis or hepatitis so I'm probably just going to keep doing what I do.

Are you able to get the HepA/HepB shot(s) too? (None of these are 100% effective of course, but seems worth doing. :))

They're typically combined in Scotland: HPV shot in one shoulder, combined hepatitis shot in the other, a couple times.

I wish they'd make a more universal HPV vaccine (and deploy the 9-strain one more widely; only the 4-strain one is available for free on the NHS). We could also really do with an HSV vaccine, given how these viruses are increasingly found to be linked with serious disease like various cancers and Alzheimer's, not just warts and sores.

I get the whole safety thing but you know; don't sleep with drug addicts, whores, known risky guys. Besides for my first boyfriend ever (who ended up cherishing me as his boy-toy and didn't dare cheat as he knew he'd lose me), most of the guys I have been with were quite inexperienced and therefore lower risk. I love the fact that their cum is literally the essence of life and they choose to share it with me.

This is a good topic . I have been dating a guy for about 6 months . I am a virgin he has been sending signals that it’s Time . I am pretty sure he does not want to use a condom . About a month ago , when he was sending signals . He was like skin yo skin and the exchange of bodily fluids makes us closer . He will be home from work in probably an hour or two . I am probably going to let him have sex with me . I do love him , so I am leaning towards letting him do what he wants . 😘
