Too much water is bad for you; it lowers the concentration of salt in your body, most notably affecting the brain. We get most of our water requirements from our food, and should only supplement when we feel thirsty (which is your body/brain telling you it wants more water).

School has been telling me to drink at least six glasses of water per day as long as I've lived. Why is nutritional science so damn fickle?

I hadn't heard such a recommendation given seriously since elementary school.

The problem isn't nutritonists. The problem is laypeople who hear or read a recommendation once and then hold it as an absolute fact and propagate it for the rest of their lives. As with all science, with more research and better understanding comes change to conclusions.

Wow, I'm a bit afraid to write down how much water I drink every day. :|
(At least 6 liters on a day off)

According to my nursing texts, you need 2500-3000 mL of water per day. The average person only actually drinks 1500 mL or less. The other 1000 mL is absorbed from the foods you eat.

That's 50 oz. of water, give or take. Over 100 oz. would probably be unusual no matter how big you are.

Now with that said, I drink SO much more water than that. I constantly have a 32 oz. powerade bottle of water with me at all times. All it takes is maybe an hour without drinking some of that water, and I feel tired, slow, and just.. dry. I crave water. It's even worse when I'm dieting the way I am now.

So really, let your thirst tell you what you need. However, be aware that because many Americans are unhealthy and don't even directly drink water, the thirst reflex can be fucked up. If you feel thirsty and then don't respond to it relatively quickly, that thirst reflex can be suppressed enough to disappear even though your body still needs water. If you respond to thirst with, say, a soda, you may have sated the reflex, but in a very short time, you'll have made the body's need for thirst even worse. Many people mistake it for hunger and then eat. It's a fucked cycle.

The best policy, IMO, is to keep a bottle of water with you at all times. Refill it at water fountains or sinks. Take regular sips. Some people need more water than others because they sweat more, or lose more water on their skin surface or from exhaling. Once you get used to drinking water a lot, your body will crave it when you need it. It's kind of awesome.

When I'm not dieting, I probably drink 4,000 mL of water a day. That's ~134 oz. When I am dieting, it can easily be 7,000 mL or more. I'm healthy as a horse, other than being overweight, which I'm fixing.

Last night I bought a bottle of Prosecco. Then somehow I decided it was a good idea to drink the entire bottle. It was very tasty, but I paid for it dearly.

Sherri's switching between mL and oz confused my metric brain, but she's right. There's no magic number of glasses of water you should be drinking per day (we were always told eight in school), and your body will make it very clear if you're not getting enough water.

That said, I'm drinking Budweiser.

I was drinking eggnog until it made me so lethargic and heavy. I think it's the egg or sugar in it that made me feel shitty. That or I forgot to take my medicine yesterday.

Wanted a gin and tonic. As it transpires, I have no tonic. So I'm forced to have to power through this martini.

I made eggnog, curious as to the American fascination. I'm not sure I'm keen on drinking what is essentially custard with brandy in.

Smirnoff and coke.

My water habits are pretty similar to Sherri, I'll drain my 750ml mizone bottle like I'm Thor and its that frost giant's drinking horn.

If it's custard-like, you made it wrong.

Ita basically all the same ingredients though. I shall rephrase; it is essentially poorly made custard with brandy in.

But custard is cooked. Eggnog isn't. That's the main difference.
