Derek wrote:I'm not sure if I accept the idea that we wouldn't be in this situation if more people voted. Democrats have had the opportunity to protect abortion with legislation in the past, and they didn't take it. Supermajorities are never real supermajorities, majorities are never real majorities, there's always an obstructionist or a technicality or a precedent getting in the way. Even now there is no chance they'll change the filibuster because it's in the interest of everyone sitting in that room that the rules prevent them from taking as much action as possible. The majorities are never real because they make sure of it.

What exactly is their strategy? Every democrat runs on issues like abortion and minority rights, but taking actual action is never part of their agenda. The subtext is, vote for us and we'll take action - if we win every seat and every state. In reality, you vote democrat just so that for the next term it's not a republican. In the wildest dreams of the average democrat, there is no transformative policy or vision that is capable of creating a self-sustaining political movement. Canceling student debt, universal healthcare, unions, wealth tax, guaranteed income, abortion rights - there is nothing on the table except a transient lack of power for your enemies.

The only convincing reason to vote blue no matter who is for the Supreme Court makeup, and even that they managed to fuck up by not responding in kind to McConnell's abuse of procedure. We're vulnerable to extremists already and we will be as long as the Democratic part is the way it is. What option is there except to let them lose?

You've floated this idea in the past, and I'm sorry but arguing for principled non-participation just sounds like a cop out to me. If you're going to be so ecumenically critical of the political status quo, doing nothing and waiting for something or someone else to eventually blow it all up isn't exactly noble.

It goes without saying that at the same time you're not voting for establishment Democrats, you should be supporting progressive candidates and labor. Maybe on a personal level though, I do have a desire to wash my hands of all of it and just focus on local things.

I'm not sure it did go without saying, but obviously it seems like a more defensible position.

Good, because that's the only reason I said it. I'm too cool to participate in anything.

You watched Heartstopper a few days ago. You’re in no position to be using the label “cool” on yourself.

I watched a cast interview too, but I didn't finish it.

I'm watching Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. It's such a sad movie! I'm at the part where Dumbledore has to drink the potion of despair. So, so sad! I started crying, too, at the part where Hermione gets all distraught that Ron doesn't like her.

Did my epic Bernie Bro rant convince you? Was your mind blown?

For some reason (I know not what [and yes, that's a John Locke reference]), whenever I blink I feel like I can see a strange light in my peripheral vision. It's as though whenever I blink, in the second it takes my eyes to open again, a light is reflected off of something I can only see in the corner of my eye.

It's really creepy, but I suppose if it's a ghost then I'm okay (Mary and Julia claim to have seen ghosts, and say they're generally quite uninterested in people). And if it's anything else, well then I'm probably fucked or just suffering from a medical condition (no doubt it's cancer, or at least no doubt that's what the internet would say if I consult WebMD).

Speaking of WebMD and the internet! Both once convinced me I had intestinal cancer and was going to die. I even went to my internist and told her about it all. She wanted to touch me, which was something of a problem—given, that is, that I don't like to be poked and prodded by people. But, in any case, my history with pseudo-illnesses/infections/infestations is a long series of stories for another time! There is, after all, a reason I feel great sympathy for Kurt Gödel! How could I not, when I know the pain so well!

Trying to diagnose yourself on google is just asking for disaster. :P

I know, but I just get very anxious about these things and sometimes can't much help myself. And to be fair, I do read a lot of scholarly research in these areas, not just WebMD. But, then again, that too is a bit like asking for a disaster.

Nothing terribly much. I was just thinking about how a part of me wishes I could move to the Isle of Sark—but only back in the good days, when it was ruled by Dame Sybil.

I’m hoping work isn’t going to be as terrible today as it has been the last two days. It has really sucked cleaning up the breakfast room; it isn’t normally my job and takes a lot of time away from what is supposed to be my job.

Not to be an enabler or anything but personally I’ll take honest vulgarity over the alternative. :P

Yeah, I know I'm in the minority. No need to remind me!

I'm angry. Disappointed and I feel misled. I'm tired of dealing with people who only ever want to use me for one reason or another.

For once, it would be nice if someone took an interest for who I am and not what I can do for them.

I'm tired of being treated like I'm worthless and coming away agreeing with that sentiment.
