Concerning Research Studies: Surveys, Questionnaires, Etc.

Hey all,

I would just like to clarify a minor issue concerning those who would like to invite the members of GFO to participate in research, for surveys, questionnaires, alien probes and what have you, outside of GFO.

Such content is considered advertising, and posting in the forum about it without permission is in violation of Rule #4.

However! This does not mean that studies are entirely unwelcome. Generally, our requirements are:
  • The study must be interesting and/or beneficial to our members.
  • If possible, the introductory post should also encourage discussion between the members.
  • The study should not be distressing to our members - or at least provide sufficient trigger warnings for participants.
  • Our members should actually fit the population that you're looking for.
  • The study cannot be annoying, offensive, or contain objectionable materials.
  • The study must have reasonable protections for the identity of our members, and obviously needs to provide informed consent.
  • If at all possible, we'd like to know the results and conclusions of the study after you've written it up.
Please do send an email to info@gayforum.org and let us know what you're studying and how. We are more than happy to let you know if GFO is right for you.

All the studies that had been posted before this message will be left alone. But from now on, such content posted without permission will be removed without notice.

Thanks for your cooperation.

So, a survey on GFO's favourite sandwich dressing is out of the question now? Fuck.

Go Salad Cream!

I think this thread should be pinned under rules and announcements because it is pretty much an announcement to researchers.

Also, I think that you should remove or amend the criteria that it benefits our members. I'm sure we would be happy to participate in many surveys if it didn't benefit us. For example, I would be happy to participate in a survey that needed our input that some how benefited low income women who identify as heterosexual without internet access. I realize "The study must be interesting and/or " is a catch all, but I wouldn't want to turn a researcher away just because they didn't think we would benefit or have an interest in the subject.

...Why would a researcher come here if the study is intended to benefit low-income heterosexual women without internet access?

I would indeed turn such a hypothetical study away. It's a little bit like those survey people who call up your landline that you never use for anything. They don't even really care who you are, but just want your input so they can fill a quota. If they were asking about something that you were actually interested in, or if they were going to pay you for your opinions, then that's totally different.

Haha I was just trying to think of something really random that didn't benefit our population directly.

Do we get access to these results? Because I'd like to make a few correlations and use them in my psychology thing.

You might be surprised to know that selection of landlines and cell phone via random digit dial methodology is quite complex :)

Hey everyone, I am writing a dissertation which looks at how you rate facial attractiveness and how this is affected by your sexual orientation and sex - I would be very grateful if you could complete my study!

It should only take about 15 mins and works best on a laptop. I am looking for as many participants as possible!

Data is completely anonymous and confidential and cannot be linked back to you :)

Did you… did you just post your study without permission in the very thread detailing how you must ask permission first?

Hi - just made an account to say the same thread is on GTF, and appears to still have the link in it (I refreshed to check). Posted with the same username.

Cheers, Greg.
