Is that a clever inversion of the Jewish conspiracy trope or do you not know what the Fed is?

lufia, I understand your concerns about those devout Republicans that push Christian values in our nation. You know what? Yeah, they're insane! I'm also an atheist as well. America was founded on Enlightenment values with a hint of a Judeo-Christian heritage. I believe that America is fundamentally secular because of the Constitution. The words "God" and "Jesus" does NOT appear anywhere in the document. Only the word "Creator" which isn't particular to Jesus. The Constitution states explicitly that government should NOT enforce people into religion, and the people do NOT have to practice a particular religion.

Do you remember when George W Bush held a Bible and told the nation that God told him to invade Iraq and then we re-elected him?

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. Maybe not. Perhaps be a bit more direct?

I think he's probably referring to the disjunction between any Republican Party rhetoric around secularism and their actual practice of cosying up to religious interests. They're de facto the party of American Christian fundamentalism.

Here's my opinion on the question: because if they voted for the republicunts, that wouldn't be logical. Gays voting for the republicunts would be like survivors of the WW2 genocide (I forgot the other word, sorry) voting for Hitler - totally illogical.

Valso. Comparing Republicans to Nazis and Hitler is too far fetched. Yes, it's true that Republicans tend to disagree with the gay lifestyle, and in a free society like America, THAT'S OK!!! I equally disagree with their position. However, most conservatives in America don't care about making gay people's lives miserable, and are mostly fine with marriage, as long as they are law abiding and pay their taxes like the rest of people. America has won the social issues when it comes to LBGTQ+ folks. Of course, there could be room for improvement, but all in all, it's safe and great to be non-straight here in America. Republicans can't do anything to hold gay people down nowadays.

It’s not about what they can do overnight, but what they can undo with a little law here, and a little rhetoric there.

The wise tyrant works slowly, with subtle gestures. If their work progresses, society slowly becomes receptive to their ideas, and an ‘evil’ society can be accepted as the norm.

It’s important we see these subtleties and call them out.

Of course, it's very plausible that there will always be those nut job religious right winged politicians and we should combat that and be weary of such instances. However, those folks are a minority and old. A true and sane conservative today would generally know to not cross that line, because that violates their ethos of limited government. Just for the record, I am NOT a conservative. I'm quite moderate/centrist.

Yeah, no, they're doing great on that front right now.

Oh, and I'm assuming Democrats are more self-righteous in your view? Of course, we need to be cautious about crazy right wingers, but left-wingers aren't any better. You need to understand that people prioritize their issues in politics. If you want to focus on social issues like policies and surrounding the LGBTQ+ then fine. Be my guest! That's a useless pursuit in my estimation because we already WON the battle of social equality with LGBTQ+ people, and even race I would argue. There's other issues like fiscal policy and foreign policy etc. In today's political climate, it's perfectly logical for non-straight people to not be a Democrat.

I don't give a fuck about gay rights. I don't want to live in a imperialist surveillance state where 1% of the population controls 99% of the wealth and the entire seaboard is flooded in glacier water. I do think the example of gay rights is instructive, though, in what it tells us about how able conservatives are in questions of basic morality.

.... yes it's perfectly logical for a gay person to vote for the party that openly and constantly wants to empower religious jackasses to be able to legally discriminate against them. Makes perfect sense, 10/10 logic.

I'm not saying gay people aren't entirely capable of being hoodwinked by bullshit GOP nonsense just like the straights are, but there is an extra barrier to entry into Republican political ideology that straight people don't have to perform mental gymnastics to excuse away quite as much.

Or maybe for some people the ludicrous worship of the corporate overlords goes hand-in-hand with the self-loathing belief that "no actually it is totally cool that my boss should be able to fire me just because I fuck men."

Maybe it's just my crazy lefty liberal brain that makes thinking that way seem utterly bananas.

Quick question, if that's alright: what, in your opinion, defines a left winger, or left wing political stances? No need to go into detail, I'm just wondering what you think.

Derek, you're totally right about worrying about the 1% wanting to control our lives, and that corruption does happen at the top. HOWEVER, that's a very simplistic view. From a global and historical perspective, everyone on this forum, particularly if you're from the West, IS PART OF THE 1%! It's a simplistic analysis to start finger wagging at the 1% as a Westerner when clearly, if we start opening our eyes and stop getting emotional, we're actually more wealthier than we all realize. Of course, THERE IS CORRUPTION from the top 1% and poverty here in America and in other developed nations (AKA Relative Poverty) MATTERS! However, all of that havoc isn't strictly unique to Republicans. What about the Clinton Foundation? You should also hold them and Obama accountable too for bailing out corporations. When it comes to that, it's deeper than a party issue.

Now, a left-winger in the American sense is someone who generally supports equality before the law for all, and providing a voice and empowering those who are dispossessed in society, so they can be back on their feet. Noble pursuits! I think that's beautiful!
