You guys are missing out, then. I’ll say it confidently- Pose was a whole culture reset for not only the LGBTQIA community, but for mainstream culture as well. Rupaul has done excellent with representing us in present culture, but for me to get a glimpse of what life was like for us during the HIV/AIDS epidemic, to see how trans women were (and still are) treated, feeling that PRIDE watching my people GO OFF in those ballroom categories in a time where their oppression could have easily scared them from doing so. How they touch on subjects in a self-reflective manner for the community, such as discrimination/racism even within a group that fights for equality, treatment of trans individuals, toxic masculinity, ageism, and I’m still probably missing a few. SOOOOOO important. It has made me appreciate what our community of that time did for us, not only because they had to in order to survive, but to make sure that we didn’t have to struggle to live. It changed my perspective and broadened my scope of vision, and I’m so grateful for it. I really hope it continues to ripple through mainstream culture and grow, and help others grow.
